I'm looking for some sort of stand alone carbon filter, something I can just plug in and place in the room so the smell isn't getting out and filling the whole house.

I've tried searching but come up with very little, any suggestions?

yo, same as, have looked around for you aswell, came up with some stuff but really expensive, is your grow in a tent? or just in a room?

A 3'x5' closet.

Trying to do everything 'K.I.S.S.', would rather not have to rig up ventilation as I have the heat under control.

I had seem someone on youtube with a set up similar to mine, and he showed off a small standing air/carbon filter, I think he said it was about $50-80, but I can't find the video again.
He said the smell was filling up his whole building before the filter, then after he got the filter it had contained the smell.

And thank you for looking around!

No problem mate, if i find anything ill post it for you.
Happy Hunting!

What if I place a HEPA filter for a furnace over a box fan and had that drawing the air from the room, are HEPA filters good for odor?
Or maybe I could hang an inline filter from the cloths rack/pole with a fan and have it running with out duct work, just recycling the air inside the closet?

Hate to break it to you, but you need an extraction fan going at all times to replace the air in your grow. The plants need to breathe and the stale air needs to be removed from the grow area. If you don't you're putting your plants in peril and inviting mold issues.

As for the hepa carbon filter, it won't work at all. Carbon filters are something that you really can't skimp on. Get a basic inline fan and match a carbon filter to it's cubic foot a minute air flow. Good brands are CAN filters, mountain air and phresh.

There are three kinds of filters for your grow- Prefilter, post filter and recirculate. True HEPA is specialized for pollen and may be used as a prefilter to protect against pollen. Carbon are recirculate and post filters, some will use an additional carbon on their prefilter as a safeguard in the event of backflow ( power failure). Then there is ozone.
What I recommend is a modest but full greenhouse oder scrubbin carbon post filter and fan. One of the members has posted in DIY; his post filter and computer fan set up. The filters can be had for as little as $35 or so, (to way on up) so even a recirculate set up like that (post filter and fan) if your plants only make a modest amount of smell. For more controll a true post filter system like The Oink said. Proper 4" filter $35, fan for same $20 with hose and odds and ends---- under $70 total if your into DIY What you end up with is state of the art vent and filter technology--so you can now focus on other aspects of your grow.

I do have some basic fans going for extracting and bringing in fresh air, I just wanted to avoid ductwork coming out of my closet.

Could I keep my small intake and extracting fans going, and suspend a carbon filter and inline fan in the closet, or am I running the risk of having odor issues since I would have an unfiltered fan extracting air still?

Odor control was something I overlooked a bit too much during set up, and now it's kind of a crash course in what will work properly.

Big thanks to you guys!

My :2cents:...

First and foremost, if odor is an issue - an issue that could cause legal ramifications - do not skimp. You're putting yourself and whoever lives with you at risk. Anyone who's been caught will agree with me that the bullshit you have to go through to get your shit back together is a long and winding road. The fines you have to pay, the lawyers you have to pay.. they'll far exceed the cost of what a reliable quality carbon filter would cost you.

With that being said, I'm a big supporter of DIY and believe some of these DIY filters are pretty damn impressive and could give you good results - but here's my one challenge to them - professional filters are put in a tumbler / shaker and the carbon is filled then the top is put in place and it's shaken to balance it out and compact it - the top is removed, more carbon is put in, and this process is repeated. It makes for a very very tight and compact filter. This is something you will have trouble achieving with a DIY filter. I'm sure they will remove some odor - but if you're in a public place, a neighbor can smell, some one can smell when they come in your hours - you're putting yourself in a position you don't want to be in.

Once you buy your materials and your big bag of activated carbon, do you honestly think you would spend less than $60-80 dollars? Why not spend the little extra and real filter.

What size is your grow space? What size are your extraction holes? Are all of your flowering plants located in one area?

Give us some more info so we can give you the best advice possible for your safety if nothing else.
