Grow Mediums Coco - PeatMoss

Hi fellow growers,

I am not able to pay my hands on coco coir but I purchased peat moss that looks similar; sold in light brownish bricks that need to be hydrated and expand upon rehydration. The local gardener mentioned coconut while I was purchasing it but the label said it was unfertilized peat moss.

How similar/different are peat moss and coco coir? I will upload a photo of my peat moss dry brick tomorrow.

How do i deal with my peat moss mix which is made up from peat moss/soil/perlite? As in nutrients and optimum pH levels.

I grow in Promix, which is peat with some perlite mixed. I add an additional 25 percent perlite and about 2.5 tsp of aluminum sulfate per 4 gallon pot. This puts my base pH at about 6.6- 6.7. I adjust my feeds to pH of 6.3. I try to keep my medium pH between 6.0 and 6.5 and let it drift back and forth in that range. I use Advanced Nutrients, but not the pH perfect line. I have never used coconut coir, but the peat works very good for me.

I use peat moss in all my grows, with perlite, vermiculite, and add earth worm castings. pH can be low (4.5-5) with peat so as Heavily says, you need to up it with something. I personally use dolomite lime to keep it in the 6.2-6.6 range. Coco is more close to hydro than to soil, so it's another ball game
