Mephisto Genetics De-seeding with Mitch

I did some work today, so here's part two.

The batch I'm working with today are SODK x Ghost Ltd Edition, They had been in this drying space for 6 days.

The outsides were getting pretty crispy, but the bud is not dried through completely.

First I remove as much of the stalks as I can, All the big ones. I disgard them, but if you have a strain that produces trichomes on the stems, or don't want to waste them, you could boil them in some milk for a cup of tea, or save them to make some 'stem art' :)
I also remove any larger fans or yellowed crispy leaves.

Now it's time to crumble, Just lightly by hand, removing any extra stems as I go. No more than a couple of minutes of effort here can do 2-3 plants.
mephisto-albums-thread-pics-3-picture402724-crumbleds.jpg

We previously used to just overdry our buds to crumble more easily, howeverfrom experience I now think it's less kind to the seeds when the material and in particular the little sticks and stems are hard and dry, no real damage but it could remove the markings on the shell (some strains it comes off very easily regardless - 24 carat for example) but for aesthetics of the end product this is how I now do it.

With there still being some moisture in the material, it really fluffs up. You could remove the seeds at this point, but for my process it's more work.

Here you can see the consistency of the material and the goodies within :)

The now condensed material now gets folded up into a little package (note the opening, I don't encase it completely.)
The package will now go back on to the drying shelves for 2-3 days more, and then the next part of the process can begin!

cheers!

Plus rep for taking the time to document this for us Mitch, thanks :Cool bud:

Mitch,

I'd like to acquire these two please... :) If it's not too much trouble.

Mitch,

I'd like to acquire these two please... :) If it's not too much trouble.

It might be some bother to find those two specifically, but I can assure you there'll be some 99% similar :)

Plus rep for taking the time to document this for us Mitch, thanks :Cool bud:

Not a problem, my pleasure.

:) - Just yanking yer chain....I guess taking each one and comparing it to the photo would be a little much....

Can't wait to grow some of these out.

Really interesting thread Mitch! Great to see the process - keep us updated on future going's on!

Sorry for the delay, here's part three!

I've done two methods here. I ordered mesh in various sizes to try out, as the insect mesh is really too fine. Still, the process with it, a quite sizeable batch can still be done in 30 minutes. However the mesh didn't come in time, and these needed to be processed.

So, from the last step of part two, you have your package of crumbled buds/seeded material.
mephisto-albums-thread-pics-3-picture404856-setup-s.jpg

You can see the frame with the metal insect mesh, and placed at the end is the plastic housing from a flourescent light fixture, which doubles as a nice collection tray.
Underneath is a big sheet of brown paper that will collect all the material and trichomes, it's easy to put into a tub, freeze, and then put into the tumbler whenever.

It is emptied on to the mesh, and within 5-10 minutes of tapping and moving the screen - I try to avoid touching the material or putting any pressure onto the mix, as I don't want the seeds to lose any of their markings- About 90% of the material will have fallen through

mephisto-albums-thread-pics-3-picture404857-stage-2-s.jpg

Now by getting all of what's left on the mesh to the side closest to me, Generally through tapping, the seeds stay at the bottom and the lighter material rises to the top, I put my hand on the pile, tilt the frame, and with a small gap underneath my hand, the majority of nice seeds will roll down and into the collection tray.

If it's a big amount of seeds, inevitably some green material will join them, but what's collected can be run down the mesh a few more times, this will hopefully leave you with the seeds and a few % of green matter, specs and seed husks to sort out.

On a different tray here, It's easy to let the seeds roll around and remove the green bits and pieces, combined with blowing, you can remove immature seeds pretty quickly, Then I'd allocate an hour to do the fine sorting.
mephisto-albums-thread-pics-3-picture404859-final-sorting-s.jpg

With some manipulation, again bad seeds will rise to the top, and I just crush them and throw away. It takes some time, but once they are done they're done.
.......

Here's a new method I tried, utilising a product called the 00 Box Work table. It's foldable, and opens out into two sections that have a 120 micron screen.
I think the primary use it just for making kief from larger batches, or to trim over. It comes apart, and you could do two strains at once, but for us it was better to keep together and do one strain at a time, seeds have a habbit of migrating to other places easily, so better not to take the risk.

mephisto-albums-thread-pics-3-picture404866-00-method-s.jpg

First I crumbled these buds up on the screen straight from the drying shelf, They were then left overnight to dry further whilst busted up.
mephisto-albums-thread-pics-3-picture404862-00-crumbled-s.jpg

The material was gathered up, and then using the usual mesh screen from above, was placed over the 00 box and the same tapping, agitating process as above was carried out.
mephisto-albums-thread-pics-3-picture404860-00-added-mesh-s.jpg

It was more difficult to tilt and collect the seeds over the 00 box, so I got it down to as little material as possible, and when satisfied, I used a microfiber cleaning cloth, taped to a tray to run the seeds with material over.
mephisto-albums-thread-pics-3-picture404864-00-filtering-s.jpg

Running over this a few times, it collects the sticks and green matter quite well.

mephisto-albums-thread-pics-3-picture404863-00-done-s.jpg

Then whats left will take fractionally longer to fine sort, but nothing too bad.

Now, the bonus of using the 00 work table, the kief!
I prefer this over the tumbler, as it's better for keeping contaminants and the mystery white hairs out of it, just card it an collect it, it's a very simple but effective way of doing it.
Oh also, all the de-seeded material was collected, frozen, and then re-put on the 00 screen, just played with moving it about gently for a couple of minutes.
And this had collected from the process.

The quality is very nice :)

I'm going to look to really nail down an efficient tidy method for de-seeding. And before the next seedrun, I'll have made or adapted a product to suit.

Cheers, mitch

Mitch,
Check these out.
stack sieves.jpg
They're stackable sieves.
Used in the gold prospecting world.
They come in varying mesh sizes and stack on top of any 5 gallon bucket.
This might help sort seeds by size as well.
HERE is more info.

Thanks for sharing your process.:Sharing One:

Thanks ronin !
we'll check them out, we've experimented with sieves and strainers (cooking utensils) , I wanted to make a series of frames and meshes.

but yes, it would be different for different strains.

for example Walter white, sodk make quite large seeds, with the right sized mesh / sieve you would remove the smaller immature , less desireable seeds quite quickly, however ghost makes little seeds, and they'd probably pass straight through (good and bad)

cheers
