Hello,

I'm really new in your forum and I'm planning my first grow. In the videos from Bruce Bugbee, he mentioned farred light. I can't really find something in your forum.

What is the general opinion to an extra farred light? And if you would recommend it, how and when would you use it? In combination with the full spectrum? Or just before putting the lights out? And just in the flowering phase?

I really don't understand the topic with the farred.

Thank you so much, guys!! Your forum is a big help for me :) sorry if my English isn't the very best. (you can't find much information in German forums about autoflowering, it doesnt have a good reputation, so I'm really thankful for you guys!)

I’m a newbie grower and new to AFN so not the person to give advice, but welcome to AFN and google “A closer look at far-red radiation”. It’s a short technical doc from a professor that provides a short concise explanation, but with respect to cannabis IMO far red is not fully understood/documented with research. Regardless, the balance between near red and far red light reaching the leaves in most flowering plants switches the active phytochromes, which results in either a stretching “shade avoidance response” as mentioned in the article (shifts energy to elongation of stems and leaves, one benefit is greater leaf surface area to absorb radiation), or to my understanding if near red is the more abundant wavelength the plants shift energy to growth of fruits (or flowers). So maybe we’ll come to learn more far red is good during veg to produce bigger plants, then reduce far red during flower to allow plants to concentrate more energy to the buds?

Personally I get up to 15/15 min before and after lights on/off for the Emerson effect with supplemental near and far red pucks (my cheap LEDs have some near red diodes that run constant), so 30 min total at lights on and 30 min total at lights off is the only far red I add. That’s during flower, I begin acclimating over a 2 week period when I see signs of flower with 1/1 min, then 5/5, 10/10, and finally 15/15 min as I mentioned above.

That’s just my thoughts and i’m constantly being proven wrong and learning new things from this forum! And your English usage and punctuation is top notch

It's something I've wanted to implement but I do know works. Depending on the manufacturer, about 5-10mins of exposure right after lights out. Some only do it after week 3 of flower because it can cause excessive stretch but it depends on how long you run it post lights out. It can be used throughout the whole light cycle with a full spectrum light LACKING in anything above 660nm.
