...Carl, from what I'm reading, short answer is yes! Coco is a very specialized medium, with unique properties that make it far different from even other soilless media like Promix (peat based),... coco has odd CEC behavior, involving Ca, Mg and K in particular,... Do some research on it..if it's treated like soil or even Promix, problems are all but certain! A good place to start is Canna.com, premier coco/nute company; look for articles Growing in Coco and Problem Solving in Coco especially,... One thing I know for sure is to never use just plain water! It will screw up the buffering (not pH mind you) of the Ca-Mg-K balance... coco binds Ca, and to a lesser degree, Mg, to it's particles- greedily- and until it's sated, keeps it from the plant,... coco has native K in it, and there's complex exchange going on with Ca, Mg and K, which is why flushing or even watering with straight water is a no-no! Always have at least a weak nute solution, even 300ppm will do,.... Yeah, in coco, less is more for pot volume! #gal is almost overkill, most folks run 1-2.5 max, at least with drip systems,...Over 3, and you get the slow drying, and wet bottom issues because of coco's great water holding capacity and faster draining.. coco breathes far better than peat or soil, another reason to not use larger pot!... look at some other coco growers, and the size of their plants and pots.... you can get monsters out of small pot volumes! Coco is a lot more like hydro that anything else in several ways, and this is one of them,... bigger pots do not = bigger plants, just more potential problems....:smoking:
