Hello afn!
After reading, preparing and wanting to grow for the past 2 years, I finally got the chance to do it. I'm now around day 33 and I'm feeling my plant is not where it should be. I'm concerned about yellow and brown spots i'm seeing, and curious if its growing unusually slow. But first my setup:

Space - 3"x3"x6" tent
Light - LEDs
Hyperikon x 4 ($12 per bulb)
14W actual (100W equiv), 1250 lumens, PAR38 with 40 degree beam, CRI 93+, R9>90, 2700Kelvin
Others (Cree) x 3
(My initial chooses in lights, quality LEDs but bad optics. 2 Omni-direction + 1 120 degree, sending light everywhere. Hope to retire these and use more hyperikon, plant seems to like these.
Medium
Fox Farm Ocean Forest with about 35% perlite
Nutrients
Fox Farm Trio
Specialty Equipment you've obtained (pH meter, ppm/tds meter, soil probe, etc)
color pH Tester from General Hydroponics
No ppm or em meter, might need to get that soon...
Journal: Not much, just water as need. Some attempts at low stress training, not sure how effective I was.
Feeding journal: No nutrients for the first 4 weeks, just started nutrients at 1/4 recommend, every other watering. Intend to increase feed if safe. Water every 3 days.

day 33
1st concern - Yellow spotting that is occurring on LOWER leaves only. Here's some pictures:

2nd concern - overall growth. Should my plant be bigger, with maybe more space between nodes. Maybe nitrogen deficient? I have given it very little nitrogen nutrients because I've been lead to believe FoxFarm Ocean Forest is "hot" and provides enough for the first month. I've found this might be based on old mixes though.

How's the branching? (I've never even seen a cannabis plant in person before, just the flowers.)

How's the positioning of the lights? (Side lights are off right now.)

Didn't want to bore you all with a novel, hope that this is just enough. I noticed john0108 is also growing the same strain and is having some troubles as well, but I'm not sure its the same cause. It actually looks like his is growing bigger.
Appreciate any and all help!

Hey LPython although small yours looks super healthy compared to mine lol. I can't help as I'm a beginner too but I'm sure the experts will be along shortly to offer advise. All I can say is don't loose heart, Im lucky that the DP Mazars I had in are going ok. One is harvested and the other fattening up. Do you have another seed you could pop? it could be getting its first couple of weeks under its belt while this one continues.
I will sub for the rest of your grow if thats ok and good luck:smoking:

the post says Day 40 ... is that correct?

>john0108 - I do have more seeds, each a different strain, but for reasons left unsaid I'm limited to one plant at a time. I'll just have to wait her out, hoping for a growth spurt.
Tonight I'm supposed to feed, thinking about going 1/2 recommended on the Fox Farm Grow Big (veg nute, 6-4-4) unless someone says the yellow spots are a problem.

>Yozhik - I failed to mark the exact day the seed sprouted, noob mistake. Going by what I did (scarcely) write in my journal, it could be as young as 33 days. Next time, I'll be sure to mark that...

Day 36
After feeding at about 3/4 strength, and repositioning the lights to directly above, she looks alot better than 3 days ago.

However, this one leaf looks very off.

Any advice? Cut it, or wait? It's just this one leaf that looks like this. The other leafs with markings mentioned in the first post have not gotten worse.

If I had to take a guess it would be the beginning of a calcium or magnesium deficiency. If so you need to get some cal mag or some sort of natural calcium source. The problem with a cal mag problem is that once the plant has it you can not reverse it you can only try to stop the spreading of it just like a cancer illness. It could be a ph problem but I would lean towards the first .
If you are saying that there is an identical strain being grown and you say his are bigger it doesn't mean that much but any problem you have with diseases and or ph problems is some stunting. Auto flowers are different because they are so fast it can be a challenge to correct it and not lose valuable time.

I noticed you said that you didn't give them nutes for a month and even with Ocean fresh that is a long time for an auto but that's just my opinion. Next time you may want to use Happy Frog or Roots soil something a little less hot. Auto flowers move fast so they need nutes at the right time and in the right amount and different strains use nutes differently some can handle them fine and some not so well even the plants of the same strain can and most likely can be different that way. You threw in a good amount of perlite and my guess is that it would cut the hotness of the soil down by eliminating the soil volume.

Just watering them as needed is not the best idea for the fact you want the watering schedule to be the same or very close to it. If you don't get the right amount of water throughout the container and the bottom stays dry you will kill those roots and it could lead to root rot because you have empty pockets of soil that are bone dry. How much do you give them each watering? I have found out as a new grower that that type of watering lead me to under and over watering.

I see you you said that you have never seen a plant only the buds which is amazing because you have done a great job. i was surprised to see that you went with some low stress training off the bat. I would recommend to get the basics down and a few grows down before you attempt that type of growing it is just a suggestion that's all. Also the branching looks good.

I hope I could help a little bit but i have 1 grow under my belt and I had the cal mag problem and I over watered really bad and had humidity problems and heat problems so these are the little things I have learned. As a new grower you have to keep a detailed journal of every little thing you do from the temps and how much and when you water and study you plants and make sure you look for problems and document it. There is a lot going on and a ton to take in when you are new at anything and a journal will help a ton. It also helps for the second grow so you can avoid the same mistakes. You will make it to harvest and have some good smoke to enjoy. peace.

She's looking healthy if not a bit small and your leaves are looking a bit dark (might be the start of to much nitrogen) you might want to cut back your feed to half strength and if growing under LED you are going to need a calmag supplement besides being a bit short try raising the lights a few inches a day till you see vertical growth for your first grow she doesn't look to bad

I was planning to get Cal-Mag but wanted to wait to get some forum input. I got the cal-mag and will feed a small amount tonight. Next time I grow I'll be sure to up my feed schedule.

I'll cut the nitrogen (grow big) to 1/2 strength, what about the micro nutrient (Tiger bloom) and organic feed (Big bloom, very little nitrogen)?

Thanks for the help, I'll post progress in the next few days!

Looks like it was a calcium deficiency! Added some Botanicare Cal-Mag plus and the spotting has stop (Old spots remain as expected).

I found the LED and CalMag discussion and looks like this is quite common. Too bad I never saw a warning about this in my book (Cannabis Grow Bible) or the dozens of sites I've read from. Guess that's why AFN is around, you guys know your stuff!

She's differently growing quickly now, is it too late for some low stress training?

It does look like one of the oldest leaves might die off. Should I cut?

And this is the leaf from before, hasn't gotten much worse. The rest of the plant is doing well, no new spots like this.
