Indoor First Grow - Easy Ryder Autos

Hey MD :)
How's the switch from actually having seasons to just being hot and humid all year been going for ya?
haha I kid, just not sure why anyone would willingly give up Wawa=P

on the subject of FFOF though - I third the point of hearing about it being too hot for seedlings...but in the same breath, I've seen grows floating around various places on the interwebs where people have done just fine with their autos in FFOF.
Personally, I'm too paranoid lol I've got my autos in FFOF as well, but I cut it with another, lighter soil. And actually it was more of a 40% FFOF, 50% Black Gold Organic Seedling mix, and the 10% in compost and perlite. :dunno:

CFL- my very first grow (photoperiod bag seed...that whole grow was one huge 'learn by experience'..experience lol) was done with all CFL, too. I did grow some hearty plants..cant say much else for them other than that though lol. Your ballast gets an A++ in comparison to mine lol. Im still using it to this day (only to veg now, though) but it was THEE most horrid looking, painted bright ass reflective white, rubbermaid tub. HA. its actually pretty comical.

Your garden (for lack of a better word lol) set up seems to be comically similar to my own. Ok maybe comically is the wrong word, haha, but I also grow/grew in the corner of a walk in closet. I'm using both sides now - one to veg and one to flower (which I use a 250W HPS for). I too, experienced a lot of heat issues in the closet...how big is yours btw? We (my boyfriend and I) had a less than perfect exhaust system going on so as it started getting warmer and warmer here, temps kept on going up and up...especially once we started using the HPS full time. I didnt notice you mention anything about fans or intake/exhaust. Cause, at least in my experience, CFL alone won't give you that high of a temp variance.

Lol yea, the weather down here sucks, soo hot and humid. Went from using heat straight to a/c. And wawa, omg, I miss it so much (cold cut) along with many other things..crabs etc... as far as the grow, Thanks for the light props. I'm just using the corner of the closet (6x10), no box or tent. I just have a small fan blowing across the lights and a box fan at the closet door. I keep it open 24/7 as well as the bathroom that its connected to. There's an a/c vent right next to the box fan. Temps dont get above 85° under the lights.. I might try a 250 or maybe a 400hps @ 50% for flower if the weather cools down by then...

Temps got down to 73 last night so I turned the lights on to warm things up a bit. Hopefully I get some action today....im so impatient, this is gonna be the longest 3 months ever.

I assume by 'cold cuts' you mean hoagie- correct? What about wawa iced tea?? I moved from PA to IN about 12 years ago, and when I first got there, I got headaches from the lack of wawa iced tea lol I've since ventured back to the area...thank god haha how long you been in NC?

IDK that the weather is ever gonna get cool enough down there for you to run anything but CFL without some type of exhaust system in place to suck out the hot air...(IMHO that is..but I heard y'all got some snow this winter and no one knew what to do with themselves, and like...the entire state shut down lol)
The closet I grow in is an L shaped walk in; i veg on the right side of the long part of the L and flower on the short side...i dont remember the exact dimensions...nor do I want to dig through my journal(s) to find it lol.
Edit: The closet is clearly a backwards L..I know my Right and Left...usually..:roflcry:

Im by no means an experienced grower, so take what I say with a grain of salt here buuut...that set up may work briefly, but you should really look into getting an intake/exhaust system. It sounds more complicated than it is...at least from a girls standpoint haha. Given that CFLs dont give off that much heat, I would take the fan you've got blowing across the lights and get it gently blowing across the (soon to be) girls. You want light air flow around them for a few reasons. The only one I can remember at this point in time (:bong:) is because it strengthens your stems for the weight they are gonna be putting on. An air intake is important because it supplies your girls with fresh air. Imagine if you were locked in a hot stuffy closet...well...I guess living in NC you are

.....so...wait a minute here lol I may just be stoned, but are you just turning your lights on and off willy nilly? lol cause thats what Im getting when I read that sentence haha. And I need to know before I say anything else because I might need to come to NC and beat you up lol. And that would not look good on your part, to get your ass handed to you by a 110 girl lol IJS :pighug:

You're too funny. Yea luv them hoagies, and peach tea was my fav. I used to live in PA too about 8 years ago. Near York/Harrisburg. Been down here in this humid closet for about a year now and miss the north soo much. Surprisingly enough, I've been able to land some pretty good bud down here not knowing many people. Everybody was panicking about the snow last year, kept saying I brought it with me lol... I prob will be doing some kind of intake/exhaust because I really want the yield that a hps can provide. I thought that until the seeds sprout it doesn't matter if there's light or not so I've been using them when I need to regulate temps. I know they probably wont sprout for a couple days, but I've been checking on them like every hour lol. It's like having a newborn baby. Thanks alot for your insight. :smoke:

Oh wow, you were way up there in PA. I was like...20 minutes from the Philadelphia airport, haha. I now reside in DE. Tax free bitches, everyone else can suck it lol.
Trust me, I understand the newborn baby thing 110%. I've often said to other new growers, prepare yourself for some postplantum (dun dun dun chhhhh BAZINGA! lol) depression. I (and im sure most people on their first grow) check on them every hour waiting for something to happen/change.

That could be. again - imho take it with a grain of salt - but I've only ever heard/read about people either keeping it in the dark until it sprouts or keeping the lights on 24/7 until it sprouts..some people then carry on the whole grow with a light schedule of 24on/0off. Personally, I just put any seeds I have germ'd into their final pots and put them in the closet under the CFL. Last few Ive planted Ive also been cutting an empty milk gallon in half, putting some small holes in it and putting it over the soil as a make shift humidity dome. And speaking of your humidity (in the closet, i dont even want to think about what it is outside lol) I cant remember if you've already gone over it or not, but wheres yours at? Brand new babies appreciate a pretty humid environment.

Finally some action!!!:dance2:Woke up this morning and both seed broke soil! One is progressing a little faster then the other (same one that cracked its shell first) and is fully out, the other is just barely out. Here's a few pics of my progress. I moved the lights a lot closer then the pics show. Got em around 8" away. Temps are ranging from 77-81 with 50%RH. Feel free to comment, question, or give advice. My only question at this point is should I move the lights closer? Thanks for your help.

Yeah I lived in the Mount Airy Area of PA just outside of Philly for about a year.I remember when WAWA wasn't as big as they are now.this was before they are everywhere and it was the best frigin cold cuts n tea and store bought chili I had ever had..now it sucks..their tea is good..lol.but they arent as good imo.

Congrats on the seedling sprout dude.yeah it doesnt much matter as long as when the sprout breaks the surface they have light.but you can germ in the dark just as easily as long as temp and some RH is there."AFN smoke out"
I didnt catch the strength of your light(s).but as a rule your just nursing them along with light but not intense light.you'll notice since it should be further away when they are young but as soon as you see it start to stretch a little bit you start to move it closer.in time you'll know by looking at the sprout where the light needs to be right off.8-10 inches seems fine but in the next couple days you may wanna lower it a couple inches er so.remember air flow so your sprouts dont bake man.do you run CO2??

and 80F at 50% RH is juust fine dude, awesome:pass:

Thanks dude. I have 6x26w daylight cfls in my current fixture with plans to add some side lighting once they get bigger. No CO2, just small fan to blow across the light and plants, with a box fan at the wi closet entrance right next to an a/c vent. The bathroom it connects to is open as well so I have pretty good air exchange.

No worries dude,my pleasure..the only thing Id add is you may want to look into some light supplemental CO2.dont need a ton.but a small bag or home made CO2 Genny for sprouts will help them stay and start out a bit stronger.but its not necessary ,but makes for a bit healthier plants all around. Here's sum growin Karma for ya dude
