First organic grow - blue automazar // afghan kush ryder

Computer :-D My best guess on why the die off is that the microbial life is dying off some point during the grow leaving no way of chelating the nutrients into the plants. I could have started soup style, but I really wanted to play out this grow as is so that I had as much data as possible for the next grow, even if that meant losing the grow, which thankfully I haven't. It's only because I did play it out that I know what the issue is so I guess my intuition paid off in that regard. The why of it was probably the acidity in distilled water so provided I never have to use it again I should be good on subsequent grows. But that's only a hypothesis and it'll take another few grows to bear out.

It's good you have a rough idea what's going on :)

My Mrs. hates it when I get a new fps. Currently storming through Boarderlands the pre-sequel!

Distilled/RO water should not be acidic. Normal ph should be close to neutral, 7.0. If its off more than a couple points, something's wrong! Haven't gone thru the whole post. How did you test the water? If a PH pen was used, are you sure of the calibration? Did you buy the water or make it? There is no way distilled water caused grow problems if you were adding Cal/Mag at a proper dosage. However, you need to check water ph after adding ANYTHING to your water.

ok, as to my post, I used distilled water for a short time until i got my RO unit. Tested ph right upon opening the jug and got 7.1. However, I think this explains the low ph you had:

Deionized water will quickly acquire a pH when exposed to air. Carbon dioxide, present in the atmosphere, will dissolve in the water, introducing ions and giving an acidic pH of around 5.0. The limited buffering capacity of DI water will not inhibit the formation of carbonic acid H2CO3. Boiling the water will remove the carbon dioxide to restore the absence of a pH value. In practice, the indication from chemical indicators can give a value of usually between pH 5.0 and pH 9.0 depending on the indicator used.

I think the only thing that explains it is that the manufacturer added something to the water, or failed to remove it. I tested several bottles using a digital pH pen that was calibrated using calibration solution. I won't spend too much time worrying about it though since I don't plan to need distilled water again. Sorry for the delay in responding Pop, and thanks for the insight.

I decided to harvest the first of my Think Different plants today. My plan is to take the first on day 70, and the second some time after Day 80 and compare the two. The first one I took was significantly faster maturing than the one I left. I'm sorry I've been so bad about updates, it's been a tough grow for a few reasons, and just really haven't been feeling the whole thing. I'm hoping to clean out what I have left in my tent and start a new round, probably some of Stone's genetics, and going back to the SCROG net because I find it much easier to train than LST. Anyway, enough rambling, I'll throw up the couple of pictures I took and call it a day. Hope you're all having successful grows, I'll be popping in periodically.

:slap: for your first full on organic grow medi! Nice harvest despite the problems with water. You have the right idea bro, learn and build on it. Best of luck with the next grow.

I think it looks great! And as someone who was kicking around "New Growers" with you on our first grow,
I think it was couragous to bascially make your second grow as difficult as your first by switching mediums
and techniques so completely. You should be proud that you came out above average back to back. :)

Thanks a lot A4, that means a lot. It's a hard row to hoe with Organics when there are as many ways to do it as there are people doing it, it's one of those areas I guess where there is no substitute for first hand experience. Still, it's good to have guys like you and EoF, and so many others around, to guide me as well as give me reason to stay on the path.

Thanks Trap, courageous or dumb, definitely one of those:roflcry: Hopefully things get smoother from here!

Happy we got another convert hahaa :p no really tho, as someone who recently went through the crash course in organics (with guidance from Eyes on Fire and others) I can comment that the hardest part of organics is just getting all the crap together and figuring out what/how to do with it initially. After that, the plants pretty much just grow themselves, with little input compared to chasing the chemical monsters haha :) Best of luck and grow karma your way!
