gnats & hydrogen peroxide

hi everyone,

i have noticed a few gnats flying around today. i just tried using a neem soil drench with 30ml neem per gallon of water but will have to wait a few days to see if it was effective. i also put out some of those yellow sticky traps.

ive read that H2O2 is quite effective as well with 3% H2O2 diluted 1:4 water. i have 27% hydrogen peroxide on hand right now so im trying to figure out the math which has never been my strong suit.

here is the math that i worked out so im hoping someone with better math skills than i can correct my if im wrong:

if using 3% then every 30ml would require 120ml of water

27% being 9 times the concentration would mean every 30ml i would need 1080ml water?

Sounds right, you can use cider vinegar with dish soap/washing up liquid and a bit of water in a cup and they drown in it.

thank you @Rollin_along . i dont have cider vinegar right now so i will just keep a close eye on the garden until the next watering when i will try H2O2. ive also turned off my humidifier to try and get the coco coir to dry out a little faster (i hope this is a good idea)

Also put a layer of sand and diatomacious earth as a topdressing to prevent emergence. Careful not to spray seedlings. They can persist the little buggers. I tried many remedies before shutting down my grow for month. If you start seeing them on the yellow stickies after you control the first batch, know that they are still swimming in your pots.

If the plants start looking wilty and it's not overwatering, you got em eating in the soil before emergence. I also got nematodes, they come in little tea bag like crystals and you add them to your watering, or they come in a paste like brick. They eat gnat larvea.

i did sprinkle a layer of diatomaceous earth on top but it didnt stay dry for very long as i did the neem oil drench. so far i havent seen any adult gnats flying around.

i did see those nematodes on the Home Hardware website so i will have to swing by my local store to see if they have it in stock.

When you do look for nematodes, just remember there are many varieties. Only one or two eat gnats, other varieties eat slugs or termites, or whatever. So just make sure it mentions gnats.

thanks for the info. i will be trying to get the exact same one as you showed in the photos. that particular one is made about 30 minutes away from me so it shouldn't be very difficult for me to source... i hope.

No peroxide, that's going to FUBAR the entire beneficial microbe herd along with the larvae!.... worse it does nothing to halt the generation cycle, so they will be back soon enough,... Neem isn't going to be conc. enough to be very effective either, or not enough to avoid damaging the roots potentially,... it's not meant to be used as a drench really,...
What works best longer term is mosquito bits (granules vs whole disc dunks)... Summit and Bonide are common brands; this is a bacterial killer, larvae ingest them and croak out.... adults are not harmful, they're just flying gonads basically!
What I do is make a sort of speed tea with granules, about 1/8c per gal water, no Chlorine in it of course,... I add some molasses, 1 fat T, and maybe a dash of nutes; mix it up well, and let it sit someplace warm for a day or so to help activate the bacteria.. if you have a small aquarium bubbler, even better ... Then water as usual, no need to saturate the soil/medium, but a solid drink is fine... Bti (short name) will persist in the soil, killing future vermins; 1-2 treatments per grow is usually all that's needed,.. keep the sticky traps around for adults, yellow or blue attracts them,.... lay some above the soil level too, to see how the population is doing.... it'll take a few days, but the real measure is below the surface, not so much what's flying,... Last, better look into where they came from! Some mediums can get infected at the source, or at home, open or not,.. many have hole for breathing to keep the soil fresh, but are large enough for gnats to get into!

it seems that my neem drench may have worked. i havent seen a gnat in two days so far. i will be giving it one more drench in a couple days when the coir is dry enough.
