Hey folks, Im gearing up to start another grow soon and was looking for advice using grow bags eg. white poly bags. I did my first grow last summer with ok results. After harvesting i noticed two things. 1) my plants didnt have much of a root system ( which would explain my overall results ) and 2) about half way down the bag was just a sloppy mess of soil. i had about 3 gallons of soil in each bag and about half way down was just mush. it was still wet 3 weeks after i removed the dirt from the bag. what can i do to avoid this ( if even posible ) again. eg. adding more perlite of hydroton etc. Im guessing the root system problem was related to this.

These are fabric "air-pruning" pots that encourage root development. I'm using them this year after seeing gorgeous gigantic trees grown by a professional in them last year. Wow!

I put a 50/50 mix of soil and peat moss in an old tube sock... same principle. I'm working up the will to test out a bag seed in it, just to see if it does the trick. Won't be for a week or two, but you can run your own trials if you want. Seems like its just crazy enough to work... right?
I have used smart pots for other vegetables but i need to use grow bags for "stealth reasons'. i used bigger bags then needed and lst'd them. I mixed thease in with a few other plants to be less noticeable. Its about the only way i can do it in my backyard. It worked very well last summer.

Also those reuseable shopping bags with handles sell for 99 cents at my grocery store... and they're like 10 gallons, maybe more. I dunno what material they're made out of but the legit ones are polypropylene - can probably look at the tag on one and hope it has washing instructions or something else with info on it. I'm definitely in for a 90% discount... not trying to hose a whole market... but if tube socks and one dollar grocery bags can do the trick, I'm not shelling out a tenner for the same thing. Like I said though... unproven as of yet. (take the dive, you know you wanna!)
I love it! I hadn't even known the shopping bags would work, but I totally agree it's worth a shot!

These are what I was talking about... and you suspect they might contain trace amounts of lead? Wait a minute... why would they be pseudo toxic if they're meant for groceries? Where's the source of that information?

Nvm, found the source - listed in the citations at the bottom of the article. Most were recalled that were over the federal limit, but then again, a lot of them were dirty - like never washed and thus a breeding ground for bacteria and viral contagions. Awesome...
