One of my main concerns/problems is limited tent/growing space, and related to that limitations on number of plants that can be grown and total yield/weight. With the 420 method, I simply have to give up growing variety, only have space for 1-2 plants vs. 5-6. From prior comments, the 420 method provides better overall quality (no or less larf). So with 420 get better quality but with less or hardly any variety. But how does it compare to other common growing methods in terms of productivity, particularly yield (prime bud weight) per sq. ft.?
For ex., how does the 420 method compare vs. say growing (as I do) in coco/perlite, fitting-in more plants, doing LST and having a full mostly level canopy? Or vs. much the opposite of 420, Sea of Green/SOG, essentially jamming in as many smaller vertical stemmed plants as possible?
With the way these plants grow and the amount of space they require the only way you’ll get variety is running multiple tents.
It you look at my AFN history you can see that I grew a lot of SOG when I first joined which gave me a lot of variety but more work and money spent on medium. With the 420 method I can grow a denser canopy with more top colas as opposed to a SOG grow and still be within my legal limit. The yield also never compared to what the 420 SCROG method produces in the same amount of space.

I have not personally seen a method of cultivating a plant to yield more grams per watt in any grow space than the 420Method. Variety is not an issue, just plant a different cultivar every 12 weeks. Using the 420 method on a perpetual cycle will give you so much top shelf product you'll have a job getting through it all. I end up literally just making edibles as there's just to much for me to store, It's a nice problem to have
Thank you Deano!!!!

Hope all is well with you brother.
OK, you get "more grams per watt," but how about grams/sq. ft.? How much to do you get and how big is the tent?
I disagree with your view of 420 method providing variety. I'd be growing likely one quarter or less the number of plants/strains per grow or year, such as growing 1-2 plants ≤4-times per year, 8/year at most. This is as many as I can grow in a single grow currently with my rather mainstream approach (multiple-times more plants in coco with LST).
My average SOG dry weight yield in a 2x4’ tent was around 800 grams with 8-10 plants and my 420 SCROG are producing about 1200-1400 grams. The 2 Whites I just grew for Sawney in a 2x4’ will be well over 1800 grams after I get them both cleaned up. I’ll be sure to post dry weight pics and cola shots when I have it all done.
The variety that you’re looking for will depend on the amount of tents you’re willing to run.
I like the stake method until the head reaches the side of the pot then tie to there. Usually just pull down from side of pot typically by the time you need wider tie down spots is about the time you add scrog net
Notes from here:
The 420 method is a lot different than your typical scrog. If you thumb through the thread you can see that my autos are grown naturally with basic LST started around day 15 and then completely flattened out down to the base of the stock during preflower, which is not done in your average scrog. The net in a typical scrog is used to even out a canopy or cola support and with the 420 method the net is for training only. There is also no lollippoping under the net like you see people do in a regular scrog and a lot more defoliation/canopy maintenance is required with the 420method. There’s absolutely no waste with this method and even the smallest nodes turn into some of the largest colas on the plant.
Best time to scrog your autos is about 7 days after you see your first pistils. That’ll give you enough preflower time for your small/weaker nodes to grow and stack, but not too much preflower time where they’ll get too tall and pressure you into rescrogging. If you scrog too late and dont have enough preflower time the middle of your canopies will have a hard time filling in and might leave you with some bare spots.
If you’re going for the 420 method timing is very important so good to scrog out your autos 3-5 days after seeing your first preflower pistil or about 10 days after flip with photos. This allows the last remaining stretch to be done under the net and by keeping all your main branches pointing horizontal the energy will be diverted to the smaller nodes in the middle which helps create a nice canopy of colas.
5-7 days after your first pistils show with autos
I’m constantly defoliating starting from day 20 but I do my first leaf strip (schwazz) when I’m prepping them for the net. I’ll do 2 to 3 more during flower but it all depends on how much foliage each individual plant grows. The first Critical Orange Punch I just posted required 4 schwazzings to get her to where she is and the other Critical Orange Punch only needed 3 rounds, so the amount of pruning varies from plant to plant.
I bend the main top over with a bent coat hanger stake at day 16 and keep the top pinned down for a couple weeks which helps promote more mains and a lot more side branching and I’m also guaranteed the largest kolas from not topping.
I flatten the plants out about 5-7 days after I see my first preflower pistil and that usually gives me another couple weeks of preflower stretch to help my weaker lower nodes stack and grow into huge kolas. Even the nodes at the very bottom of the plant that usually gets picked off (lollipopped) grow into big kolas. If you scrog out to early the lower nodes grow too tall and you end up with more larf from no light penetration in the middle of the plant and if you scrog out to late the lower nodes don’t have enough preflower time to stretch and stack. Timing is very important with this method!
Thanks
@Lil Dab!!!

Much appreciate you chiming in and helping out.
I apologize if Im asking the same question as others. Trying to find the info between all the pics has been tough. Couldnt find it with search either. Is there a preferred way to keep the top bent over? As in what do you do with the new growth. Spiral it around the base tight? Gently curve? straight one direction?
No worries!
My IG videos show how the 420 bent coat hanger method is done if you’re still wondering.
If you need something different to grow I can help

420autoflower has grown loads of my strains so I'm happy to help you back in to autos again. Dm me .
Interesting one would that be mate yeah but tbh doing/comparing this with autoflowers makes no real sense with autoflowers, each seed can be different/different phenotype, only way to do this is with clones from photoperiods. Growing a single auto, comparing it to lets say a SOG with 36 auto's is just luck of the draw to which one is picked.
I feel ya mate, matter of perspective too. But if you have limited 'space' and want to grow some variation this method is prob not best for you.
If you really want to go all-in, I would say you estimate gr/watt / m2 (or sq. ft for you USA folk) / Time spent (weeks from start to harvest).
This is the only variable that makes sense to compare it all.
Thanks Antonio!
Yes… the only way you’ll get a true comparison is with clones. 3-4 grams per watt (dry weight) is what the 420 method is capable of producing. This method is not meant for variety if you don’t have the extra space or equipment.
Let's not forget that this is ideal for those who follow 'plant count' rules.
I'm growing with organic soil and slow release dry amendments. Should I start the top bend early since I won't get that extra veg time and delayed preflower from hydro?
Around day 14 if everything goes right.
Seems to me the 420 way is one of the best ways, if not the very best way, to get the most out of any plant. Great architecture!
I agree brother!

The 420 method is the best way to maximize full potential.
I read this on the dutch passion site. This is a quote from 420auto. Im just worried because timing is so important.
If I hook them up to automated fertigation at day 21 my preflower pistils don’t usually appear until around day 45, giving me a little extra time to work the plant compared to your average soil grow.
I start my automated fertigation at day 14 now.
Running hydro will extend your veg time.
Too many red diodes will make your autos flower quicker.
Yeah not sure how to answer that it’s going to vary especially since your soil vs a hydro setup. I’m pretty sure even 420 will tell you it varies between plants too. Just have to watch the plant and watch for the signs rather than the days old it is. Can’t worry about it will be fine it’s not as hard as it sounds.
Might help too if you have a journal here the you can tag
@420autoflower in there he’ll follow and help plus there plenty of others folks to help along the way
Yes. Flowering time will depend on the individual plant and how you grow it.
This is another Antonio #1 I’ve been working on. She sprouted at the same time as the other Antonio’s which were harvested around day 100 but this one was a late bloomer and didn't show sex until day 68. She quickly grew out of the 3x3’ tent I originally scrogged her in quick so I stripped her down again and double scrogged her in my 4x4’ tent after Sawneys Whites finished up. Now she has the room to grow to full potential.
Check me out when you get a chance.
I guess a little introduction is the best place to start. I started growing the end of june. Im in the middle of my second run now. I was never a plant person or even taken care of a house plant. So Im not real "scientific" with my knowledge but Ive got a solid understanding of autos specifically. I decided to grow autos for a quick roi on the gear and after a poor first harvest I focused in on just auto flower info.
As a reference point of were I started. The video above is the better of the 2 plants I grew on the first run. Severely stunted early but she didnt die. GMO...
Nice bro!
Thanks for sharing.
Made the bend this morning.

Looks good.
Keep that top pinned down by adjusting your stake daily and keep those nodes exposed by tucking or plucking.
One week later (after a serious defoliation already)

She looks nice
@Saint jimmy!
Top site defoliation should be all you need for awhile.
That’s when it is time to pull out the pliers wrapped in electrical tape! I crushed some MONSTER stems when I super cropped and flattened out the alien versus triangle pictured above
The pliers are definitely needed when it’s time to SCROG. Tools of the trade!
