Live Stoner Chat Hello from Portugal :)

I actually started a thread there but it's not a journal, just some questions about my grow box size, I've already ordered the important stuff, it should arrive soon, I'm just waiting to start doing modifications to the box to start my journal

:welcome: well welcome to the FAM!!
I see you are well on your way getting things figured out for your grow here.

just a thought for the smell, for wayyy less than a filter (maybe while you save up for a fan/filter combo) you can go with something like O.N.A. gel (odor neutralizing agent) just put it in the area of the plants and it fills the room with what ever "flavor" you decide to smell all the time and thats it...you smell the ona and not the plants. i used to put ona around the front door and room door the enclosure was in for extra precautions when i used to worry about it...anyways best of luck have fun with your cannaventures!!

Great tip, SGA! I never thunk it! :Sharing One:

It was late october 2010 when I was in wonderfull Lisboa and the sun burnt like crazy. So, the first thing that comes to my mind is summer heat in Portugal.

Last august I have experienced some portugese heat in our country a little bit to north and a little bit to east from Portugal, which damaged my plantes severely despite of having AC in the appartment. Why? Because they were photo plants, they were in 12/12 period and the closet was of course closed to assure total darkness. Since I was not able to provide sufficient air exchange, temperatures were close to 40 C. Disaster.

If I grew autos, I would be able to ventilate the closet, open the door and let the cold air from AC. But with photos that was impossible because of their light schedule and because of excessive stink they were spreading around.

Two arguments that speak for autos, at least in my experience. Excessive heat is easier to cope with if you do not have this total darkness terror and the fact that autos do not spread so much stink around. Not to mention that in multiple grow you can circle plants however you want and breed seedlings, veggies and flowering ones together lika a big happy family enjoying equal rights to 20/4 cicle and no total darkness terror. I do not say that they do not like 4 hours of total darkness but it is not a must.

Since you are on a low budget, you have chosen quite good bulb for 55x55cm area. How many plants are you going to have in? If I were you, I would buy 15l smart pot or 20 l ordinary, get some Plagron Light mix which is widely available in EU grow shops and plant 3x Think Different (the smallest pack is 3) in order to get out the best one or maybe two of them if you wish. Of course if you work this way you have to have a little bit more equipment but at the end you see that it has paid out itself. Beware of unproductive stretching if you will push too many plants under your light.

I will explain you one more advantage of Plagron light mix besides beeing awesome media. If you will have troubles or you will need an advice, many experts here will know exatly what you have got in your pot and instruct you instantly and precisely as soon as you would explain what you had put in. If you grow in your own media everybody will just guess about the right answers and you will never know where you are.

What kind of water are you going to use? If tap water check ph first. You will get it on the web page of your supplier. Do not underestimate ph importance as thousands or millions of growers around the world including me had done in the past and regereted later.

Do not let ph issues terrorize your life as they terrorized mine. Wrong ph in the times when you will make many other mistakes can be fatal and might push you among ganja buyers again.

I am going to make a homemade carbon filter, I've seen a few ONA products but I know one guy that sprayed ONA on his cabinet and then the weed smelled and tasted like the product, I'm still not sure about it but if it is less expensive and works the same I might try it.

Even though I don't live in Lisbon it is indeed a wonderful city.
I'm going for the 20/4 light period as many say I should because the plants need a little rest.
unfortunately I'm no longer gonna use that 55x55 cabinet, I'm gonna use one that's small because for now it works better for me, I might upgrade in the future but for now I'm gonna use 40cm x 30cm x 80cm, I know that this is way smaller but considering that some people use PC boxes to grow I should be fine. On this space I think that I can put 2 plants but you guys know better so how many should I put there?
For the soil I'm gonna use Compo Sana wich the ph is 5,0 – 6,5 and the nutritive elements mg/l are N = 200 –450; P2O5 = 200 – 500 ; K2O = 300 – 550. Most growers on my country use this soil and they say that it's pretty good. I don't know what you mean by "Think Different", mind explaining?

I'm probably gonna use tap water, is there any other water I can use? I might not get a PH Meter right at the beggining but I plan on buying one.

Think Different is famous Dutch Passion strain which you might love as many others including me. But 40x30 is a bit small and you had better check micro grow section for ideas.

ONA is good if you want to cover smell for a short time, because it makes the place smell another way. But it does not destroy ganja stink and leave no trace. It covers it with another strong odour. You can not use it for a long time.

I have seven plants right now in my appartment and do not use anything. There is always current under front door from outside inside, so it does not go out (at least now in winter). When I get visitors, I close the closet and power on fan which pulls air inside ant nothing comes out. But that depends on your place and who you have to be afraid of.

To test ph you can get cheap ph meter kit, in our grow shops it costs 7,40 €. They work by putting a small amount of nutrient solution in a container then adding a few drops of pH test liquid and mixing them together. The combined mixture will turn color. This color is then matched with the color on a pH chart (included with the test kit) to determine the pH level of the nutrient solution. It works for the beginning.

Your tap water is most likely alkaline, and your rain water might be acidic. Your plants will not like them and you will not know what is wrong.

you can get an ona spray and I believe this is what your friend used, what im speaking of comes in a gal pail is is an absorbant gel stuff with the liquid in it, just poke a couple holes in the top and your good to go...and yes it only masks does not kill the smell.

besides depending on strains some smell ALOT some smell very little, so keep this in mind as well

Well I might try that if my carbon filter doesn't work but for now I'm going for the filter, thanks for the help tho.
I will get a ph test kit when I find one.
