I need help in deciding what kind of HID light fixture to get. I will be running 2 x 1000w. Problem is I live far away and shipping costs for Air cooled fixtures is huge. I have been quoted 600 US dollars just for shipping one Radiant 6 air cooled light to me from greners

. The fixture is just 110$ in price. I can go without air cooled fixtures as I have an 2 tonne AC split unit in the grow room. My questions are

1. Coz of the shipping costs I have started looking at open fixtures like Adjust a Wing and xatrsun Alumunium wing. They are lighter and shipping seems to be cheaper. Will they be good enough for a 4 x 4 area coverage per 1000w?

2. Is it safe to use an MH or HPS bulb in open fixtures? Is there any chance of bulbs blowing up or failing coz of moisture in grow room if fixture aint sealed? Can the bulb cause burns if its accidentally touched while working on plants?

There are no good fixtures available locally and no other choice than importing something from USA or UK.

Any suggestions or help will be highly appreciated.

Good Morning!

How far are we talking here? Are you an Alaskan, a Canuck, in Siberia, Micronesia? Need a general idea to help you source one out that'll fit the bill. There's lots of great stuff all over the world if you know where to find it. There's loads of folks here from all over and i'll bet somebody knows "something"! I have a Cool Tube XL that is huge works great in my 4x4. I've only got a 400w bulbs, MH and HPS and ballast (actually 2 sets) but they came with the standard small wing reflector. Whole package each was $120. The cool tube was $80 and free shipping in the States. BUT since you likely are somewhere else, well...

Yes, if the plant touches the light for even a second, severe burn can ensue!

Does your light need to be put in a horizontal position(should be written somewhere)?
You can grow vertical without the need of a reflector:)

FYI: Verticals sometimes require different bulb types. I've seen a few bulbs that work both ways. Depends on what you may already have in hand.

I am a Paki :) I am not very experienced grower so growing vertical is not an option. How big is the packaging box of the cooltube you used Txold?

Yep, That's a long haul! Have you tried sourcing from China (if your allowed). Not sure what kind of Trade is allowed in Pakistan. If goods from China are allowed, I think that would be your best source.
Here's a quick Alibaba search I did for Cool Tube and several sources are in China (CN). There are some that will sell 1 or 2 at a time. See if this works for you. You can search other types and styles. Whatever works...

I am not sure about paki, but if you have to spend that much on shipping, you might want to consider growing outdoors, unless you can afford it.

It is a hard mess to be in, but if you aren't worried about shipping costs, then go for it. You will be happy once you get over how much you spent on the lights.

Have you looked into chinese companies carrying grow lights? It may not cost as much coming from China.

I don't know how many people will have experience in this, as I am only guessing myself.

Good Luck, and I will be back to see what happens.

Peace

Well I did look at Alibaba but not sure about quality. I used some local reflectors(which r imported from china) for my 400w hps. They had very very poor light coverage and inside silver reflecting material turned black after one grow. My 180w MS0006 gives better coverage than those reflectors with 400hps :)

@MasterEkeman
Growing outdoor is an option and I did try it but did not get desired results. Main problem is the weather. From mid April to late August Temps will be hovering between 30-42 C. Another problem is pests. I have only had very few grows under my belt. Inside I did not face any problems but outdoors it was hell. Spider mites, white flies u name it. I tried what ever I could get my hands on locally to sort it out but could not handle it and had to scrap the grow. Spider Mites specially were big problem and all organic sprays I used failed or I guess I was too late in spotting them.
