Grow Mediums Hempy Gen3 Experiment & Write-up by Anthro

Picking up steam now! Starting to look like real plants lol!

Really moving now! I don't think I've seen any of my plants move with such speed and vigor! First pistils started coming out.

Still got a couple tiny CalMag def spots, but that's not surprising considering how fast they're building new biomass. We're up to 100% strength now on CalMag in the water, plus Earth Juice Micro, plus all the ferts in the media! Still can't keep up! So, we might have to up the CalMag to 125%.

Still spraying 3x per week with the [HASHTAG]#OpticFoliar[/HASHTAG] and using [HASHTAG]#MammothP[/HASHTAG] and Real Growers [HASHTAG]#Recharge[/HASHTAG].

We'll start LST training soon when the branches get a bit longer.

I like it! Experiments and science for the win. I'll be following this. Think I'm going to run a hempy style bucket on my 2nd grow. Planning on 2-3" of large perlite with an airstone and a soil/coco mix on top. I like your center wick, think I might copy that using silica wick. Been vaping off it for years so a couple strands in soil should be A-okay!

I'll be watching you. :smoking:

They're nearly ready for some LST tie-down training! Branches are almost reaching the bucket sides. I may begin tying some down tomorrow. Watered and inspected today, everything looks good, CalMag def appears halted for now.

LST is in effect! Switched on the Bloom spectrum on the Mars, 75% strength Canna Boost now, 100% strength CalMag still, 100% strength now on Mammoth P, Recharge, Roots Excelurator Gold, silica powder, Microblast. Still spraying Mon, Wed, Fri with Optic Foliar [HASHTAG]#opticfoliar[/HASHTAG]

So far the additional ferts and nutes are holding up very well compared to the deficiencies I was battling last time in hempy. No real deficiency now, just a couple very tiny CalMag spots on a couple leaves each plant. No signs of burn either, which I was worried about when going so strong with those controlled-release ferts.

Afghan Kush Ryder, if anything it almost looks a bit hungry for Nitrogen, which is odd. Not sure I can really treat it either, since everyone gets the same feed water. I could try top-dressing with a strong N ammendment, but I don't think that will really work in hempy.

Things really moving, flowering in earnest, no major issues still. They did get a bit too dry, and a few lowest leaves lost some color, I suspect that the media needs to have some moisture for the controlled release ferts to function. Watered today, but I can tell not much made it to the reservoir after wetting the media, so tomorrow I will mix up another watering. Anyway even with a couple lower discolorations, this round is infinitely more healthy than my last hempy! So I know I've made progress with some of these experiments. I went up to ~110% on the CalMag.

Together: notice that the smallest plant has been the Afghan Kush Ryder (far left) but now rocketed itself to the top size!

Moving along just fine, very mild deficiency on a couple plants, no biggie but it might hurt yield a tad. It's not CalMag def at least this time lol, up to 125% strength CalMag. But I am pushing them pretty hard this time, so a little def or burn is understandable. I'd have to sit down with the charts and figure out what deficiency it is precisely.

Failing on regular updates lol, but still in action! This is from a week ago, putting on steady mass now, trichomes started forming.

Doing okay, they're eating up leaves a little bit ahead of what they should be. So they're not getting their needs totally met from the ferts, but much better than the last experiment. So, Osmocote Plus, plus Dynamite flower food, plus Azomite, does do better than just Osmocote Plus alone. I'm also using 1.5~2.0ml / gallon of Canna PK 13/14, so I don't think they're short on macro nutes, or shouldn't be at least. They're at like 150% strength Botanicare CalMag Plus, so I don't think it's that. The pH of the medium is good.

It's going to take some more experiments I think, this isn't the "set it and forget it" I originally thought it might could be. I'm not sure it's actually possible to get enough CalMag into a soilless medium to last the whole grow! A good organic soil is definitely closer to that.

In any case, I'm enjoying the experiment. :)

The Dinafem Industrial Plant CBD auto was kinda disappointing, I expected it to be gigantic in hempy after my soil one last round was huge.

One of the White Widow autos is kicking butt!

White Widow auto [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] is good, more bush like.

Still a good bit of time left, but time to start planning the next round!

Going mostly well, had to be away from the ladies a couple times for many days, and 1 did not like that at all. So I culled the Industrial Plant CBD auto early, it wasn't doing well this whole time really, not sure exactly why. Just wasn't performing well at all. Strange because last round I did two in soil with Optic Foliar and they thrived and made a lot of herb. So I expected it to go crazy in hempy!

Anyway it's cut whole and is drying whole, I'm just going to grind the whole thing into oil. Very few trichomes and terrible looking bud, I wouldn't want to smoke / vape it, but will do fine for oil capsules later.

The other three are doing great, just moving along towards harvest. Hard to say yet but maybe a couple weeks, maybe 3 weeks.

Left to right: Afghan Kush Ryder, White Widow auto, White Widow auto.

The WW on the right is the one with added air to the rootzone. It didn't appear to have any improvement over normal, in fact it looks smaller, but a 1 to 1 test from seed isn't enough to make any solid scientific observations with. I'll still try it in soil sometime.
