I started these two girls (Amnesia Haze Auto Fem) about 12 days ago - they emerged 9 days ago. They have been outside in a spot shaded from our hot afternoon sun. They’re both in 10gallon (38L) grow bags with FoxFarm soil with some additional amendments like coco, vermiculite, myco, worm castings, etc. we have had some very hot weather this summer with afternoon temps reaching 100°F (38°C) and they have been enduring. Since they are going to live outside I wanted to start some outside. I started some more indoors a few days ago to compare but I should have done them all at the same time to have an easier comparison. What do YOU think about how they’re looking at 9 days young??

This biggest one seems a little leggy compared to the other. I have about 2” more room to add soil to the top of these bags. Would it be a good idea to add some soil and bury part of the stem, say, up to the colyedon leaves? Or should I just let her go and allow the wind to strengthen her stalk? I’m thinking I’ll put them in a spot with about 50% more sun in another 2-3 days.

Looks good for 9 days. It looks, to me, the soil may be a tad hot for the wee one. Maybe from the added castings. Good luck!

This one (below) is slightly smaller but not as leggy as the one above. I love “big” but I like the structure of this one. The 2 are right next to each other but I think this one gets a more direct blast of sun. I think I’m going to swap their places and see if they balance out.

I struggled with adding pictures to posts and getting the right ones where I needed them. I have it straight between my 2 posts above, each with their own photo.

Is it that weird 1st set of serrated leaves that makes you think the soil is too hot? I’m trying to learn. I put a 16oz cup worth of FoxFarm Light Warrior in the center of the pot so that seedlings wouldn’t get too many nutrients early on and would grow into the hotter soil slowly. Maybe that didn’t work? The upper leaves look fine so maybe it’s adapting?

Thanks for the quick reply!

Yeah, the edges appear to be burnt a bit. Good move, with the layering of soil. All new growth looks great. Whatever it was, she seems to be happily adapting.

Thanks! Would you add some soil around the stem of the leggier looking one, to make her less susceptible to wind or jus leave her alone?

I wouldnt consider either to be leggy. You could always put something near the pot to deflect wind, if that's an issue right now. If you do add more soil, I'd leave a little room between soil and cotyledon.

i would use a couple of hooked wires to stabilize her against the wind....have you checked out the maximizing autos and photos articles yet?

Yessir, I read those articles. Unfortunately that one I thought looked better got plucked out of the soil by a bird and left laying a few inches from the soil (like a dead soldier, roots and all) for me to see! Ugh! It’s ALWAYS something with me. Lol! Go figure!

Hold the fort!! SHE YET LIVES!!

I found her limp as the lettuce in a 2-day old Big Mac but made a new hole draped her root into it, snugged her in and watered her well with myco and this morning she’s ALIVE! She has laying completely flat with no sign of life at all but is now at least standing up. That’s just amazing. I wonder if this champ will make it?!?
