I have two MarsHydro 300W old style's. I start my seedlings at 30" and leave the light there until the plant stretches up to within 24 inches then keep it at 24 until the stretch is over. When flowering begins, I lower it down so the top of the main cola is about 12 inches, which leaves most of the rest of the canopy at about 18 inches.
It is my understanding (very limited) that led's emit very direct light from each led. The different led output then blend together at a certain distance determined by the angle each led emits. So too close, you may not be getting the blending intended when following mfg recommended heights. When I first got mine, I was running as close as I thought I could get away with, after a couple grows I now follow the height regime above with much better results. Just the way I do it.
