Lighting LED VS. LED (brands)

Hi all, interesting thread, after being involved with the testing of quite a few different leds over the last 4 years my personal favourite is the plant photonics amethyst range, Osram ssl80's and its the quietest and lightest one I've ever used.
Prices are very reasonable and yields are amazing, the largest led they have uses 155w and my mate who has my two at the moment has pulled 450+ G's from 2 plants under both of them, a grapefruit auto yielded 245g's dry and the other strain was a haze XXL auto, that yielded 200 G's dry. Both in 15 L airpots, GET aroma formula nutes and 24/0 schedule, took 8 weeks total.
Budmasters units are good as he also has them, but... yeah the price is woooooah and he hasn't pulled anywhere near what those units use.
just my input folks, the DIY stuff going on is superb aswell, good to see people getting stuck in
Happy Xmas aswell all. Hope its a good one.

Lets put things in perspective, 'cos auto's are auto's, and one seed can be a monster while the other a little crawler.
The only way to really test LED's is in controlled situation with proper clones.

I've been a tester for GN and HydroGrowLED and Alien Hydroponics (and Dutch Passion) - so it's not really cool for me to to talk up or down on anyone in specific as that might seem biased - so take what I say with a grain of salt - disclaimer over.

I definitely do have a strong opinion on the subject, as my testing's sole purpose is to serve the community.

Fact is, 99% of the brands out there are chinese OEM. They cut a contract with "producers" (should be called "branders" really) and ship out amazing products at fabulous prices at first. Then slowly they start trickling crap into the stock. The bigger the seller, the bigger number of sub-par internals roll out from China into the wild. Drivers go bad, chips burn, lower bin numbers, etc etc. Since numbers are so big, Quality Control is impossible to do efficiently. And randomly seldom tell the true story.

That is why I have the highest respect for those out there really doing their work proper, even if that mean long delays, huge product cycles, or unfortunately high street prices.

For instance, you can still buy a "GN Ms0006" … just go over to Cidly.com an order an Apollo 6. I would definitely not recommend it though. At all. Or worse even, scavenge ebay for an identical looking product, light a candle and make a prayer. I have a magnificent Alien Hydroponic 400w COB, only 200 ever existed, that I highly advised them not to roll out. They produce hydroponics systems and this would be an accessory. Problem is when units start failing and they need to RMA them back to china for servicing/replacement - they're not LED specialists so this could seriously backfire using the China import model.

People grow AMAZING plants with ancient tech lamppost HID's. Any grow LED is more efficient in PAR. So what really matters here is customer service and warranty, and product feature set.

Obviously, in equal controlled conditions, better spectrum = better plants, no question about this.

For example, for me it is highly imperative to have a quiet growroom. I would DEFINITELY buy premium for a fanless or a quiet fanned light. Many might not care at all.

This is how serious I am about it. I swapped the stock fans for SilentX fans. Spent about 80 bucks to buy the fans and get them installed (since I am electronically illiterate).

GN's Ms0006 are possibly some of the quietest light with fans ever made! even still, I went the extra mile to have near silence.

Running strong since 2013.

(yes, the video does have audio!)

So do I notice difference between lights? Yes and no. I'm getting better and better, so is it the light, or me? Is it htat combination of genetics with those new nutrients you're using? Is it winter of summer? How stable is your grow rooms Temp and RH% throughout the year?

Having said that, I am a parametric freak, so I definitely do control my grow room conditions to the max… like OCD style really. And yes, I definitely do see a difference in a better spectrum light with more efficient output… but what good is it if 9 months later they start crapping out?

And that, in the end of flowering, absolutely does f*ck up your yield, no matter how efficient the light technically is.

Moral of the story? Choose wisely.
