If we make account now would that make a difference when we migrate? We probably going to lose personal content from here right?

No to the first one.

And as to that; I'm going to e-mail their company to ask for a quote on migrating data from here to there. What that would look like, how expensive are we talking about, etc.

I know that you can migrate from this to that. It's not a question of "if," it's more of "what do we bring with, what's realistic, what makes the most sense," etc. We can ask if users create accounts now, if the migration would overwrite the existing user accounts, etc.

I would not get invested during this test, this was more of a "hey, let's check this out." This is the complete, non-configured out of the box experience too, so if there are things that suck, nothing has been tweaked or gone through.

And again, this is just a trial. But the idea is to try to make the best of it, because right now I don't see land in site with our current forum software.
