I read it's best to use PH up cause the baking soda can leave salts behind in the soil that you need to flush.
The small amount of Baking Soda that is needed to raise the water/feed pH is not really going to add a critical mount of salts to your soil. In a pinch it's an ideal way to keep the water/feed pH level intact. I used less than the amount of pH UP that I would normally use to get the same results. In fact I don't see the need to buy pH UP. A box of Arm & Hammer Backing Soda was under $2.00 and just a "pinch" of it made my feed pH just right.
Not saying that ph UP isn't worth it, but.....
Trying to correct a pH issue takes time. Raising and lowering pH fast can be just as bad as the situation your in now. I cannot give you any advise on flushing out your soil, because I haven't had an issues with pH. I Feed-Water-Water. With a good 25%-30% run off. That seems to keep my soil evenly pH'd. I always try to add my Feed/Watering @ 6.3-6.8. That seems to work for my grows. I use Coco Loco "soil" now and even with Happy Frog I seldom have pH issues.
Also the Nirvana Swiss Cheese that I've been growing is remarkably tolerant.
