Been a while since I acquired the parts to assemble two CLU 048-1812 lights. I have decided to direct solder the wires since I'm using the Artic Alpine's. Once I figure out how to get the conductive film off (that came pre-applied), I will mount the COB with thermal epoxy. Any suggestions, insights? All is greatly appreciated.

If you haven't used Thermal epoxy/paste before, be careful not to go overboard with the quantity as it will reduce the efficiency.
All the Thermal Interface material has to do is fill in all the microscopic crevices and imperfections in the 2 surfaces being joined in order to create a clean heat flow.
Even using the Epoxy version, this will be enough to Glue the COB to the heatsink.
Should be about the size of a grain of rice.
I would actually get a cheap throwaway tube of normal Paste and experiment with that first to see the size you would need.

Also, be very careful when applying the pressure to spread the paste as COBs are rather fragile.
Alternatively, you could use a credit card (or similar) to spread a REALLY thin layer (I am talking almost transparent here) on both the heatsink surface and the COB surface and just lightly press them together - that would remove the risk from the pressure.

Razor blade (horizontally to slide under the TIM) if it is a Tape.
Isopropyl alcohol (or Zippo Lighter Fluid) and cotton swabs if it is a paste.

Use the Isopropyl/lighter fluid with the tape too. It helps break the adhesive.

Artic Silver made the best Epoxy when I was using it - though that was quite some time ago. Not sure if there are better available now, but it was still damned good.

BTW, I have already purchased the epoxy you recommended. Gonna get my hands on a brand new razor scraper this weekend (hopefully). Money is super tight at the moment. But I think I can scrape $2 together. It's been a while since I scoured the couch for change.. Thanks Big Time Bro! I appreciate your help!

They will handle about 20.
You only need a small amount.

Watch this video - you will want to use the same amount as he uses here.
Just ignore the fact that it is in a computer. The information is still correct.



You will want the same amount that he uses in TOTAL - half that amount of each part to mix.
I would do the mixing on a CD case or something and then use the spatula to get some onto the COB. Just go easy with the pressure as the COB is fragile, and do not press directly onto the LED part of the COB.
