Mephisto Genetics Mephisto Germ Issues - Help Required

Placing seeds in a cup on a seedling heat mat can kill seeds with no buffer between the mat and the container the water and seeds are in gets too hot
Exactly why I suggest getting your environment up to temp. Heating pads are not ideal, but some need the added temps.

So after months of trying to get my hands in Mephisto, a local South African seedbank brought in a few packs, at rather steep prices. I picked up a 3 pack of Gold Glue, 3 pack of 24ct and a 7 pack of Strawberry Nuggets.

However, my excitement has been muted by failed germinations. 6 of them to be precise.

I am currently trying to pop my last GG and 24ct seeds after the others didn't pop.

It's now been 72 hours using the recommended technique but this is what I have, the GG has shown some root and the 24ct is cracked, but no root yet from the 24ct and the GG root seems small for the amount of time it has had. One of the other failed germs did the same as the GG and then the root just never progressed. I'm worried this will do the same. The paper towels aren't excessively wet, but moist. They don't drip or anything... I opened up the one failed germ today to take a look at the inside, and it was mostly mushy - making me think it is a rot. But the towels aren't excessively wet. The only thing I could think of that could cause the rot would be the very high humidity within the ziplock, but since that's the recommended method, I feel like that can't be right...

Feedback appreciated.

I am 100% satisfied with Mephisto, and had 100% germ with 4 other varieties, but only had problems with Gold Glue. Only got 1 out of 5 to pop. One was half a seed and did nothing and three popped partially exactly as yours did and then stopped as yours did as well. I'm about to reorder from Mephisto, a larger order than my first and will ask if they will do something as it sounds like it may be an issue with this seed release. The quality of everything else is extraordinary so I hesitated even posting about it lest anyone be dissuaded from buying Mephisto. Mostly glad to know it wasn't me and that my germ procedure is sound. Thanks. Here is a pic of my current grow. My only Gold Glue that made it is center middle at about 24 days from seed. All Mephisto, counterclockwise starting lower right, Sour Livers, Ripleys OG, White Chem, Ripleys OG, Sour Livers(more sativa pheno), Forgotten Cookies, and Gold Glue in center. I germ 24 hour water soak then into rapid rooter cube in tray on heat mat 3-7 days until root tip shows, then Mykos and into organic soil

I also left partially popped Gold Glue seeds in moist rapid rooter for 3 weeks and it never progressed from the state shown in your last pic. Just wanted to answer those who correctly state that some seeds can take longer because that was simply not the case. I've read of some people scratching seed cover or otherwise helping seeds along, and now wonder if this strain may be predisposed to having a heavy seed coat and not being able to clear it. Perhaps a skillful scraping or other manipulation will make soak germ more effective. I will research that for use if I run into similar again.

Definitely appears to be an issue with the 2 batches I got, just followed the same germ tech with 5 other seeds (2 of them Strawberry Nuggets) and they all popped without issue. The seed bank is in talks with the seed distribution company to see if they can hook up some replacements.

I wouldn‘t scrape it .. less manipulation is always better. But there is something I can recommend (doing it myself): Next time you soak a seed, put it in 16 parts RO-water with 1 part H2O2 at 3%. H2O2 will soften the shell and increase the oxygen intake without harming your seed. After 24h rins and plant it ..use always gloves, don‘t touch the seed with bare hands. Temps +/- 80F.

Good luck!

Sorry can't contribute to the germ issue but I can say that garden looks fantastic. Very nice. Good luck too.

I've had trouble with mephisto gold glue.
2/2 failed to survive.
I've never had trouble with any other mephisto strains.
Strawberry Nuggets is my favorite.

2 for 2 on Glue and 11 out of 12 overall, I buried the 12th too deep ..... most issues are operator error .... Love Nugs as well and Gold Glue!

I use temp controller to measure both water seed soaks in and the soil ..... Even a few degrees variance over or under optimal levels are not desirable and may produce a weak sister ...... Can’t express enough how important a good start is and temps, play a very important role ....

I use a heating Matt thermostat contmroller - Under $20 and worth every cent!

Where did you find that heat mat thermostat?

My local shop didn't have anything less then $50. I am currently running a simple timer on the mat to try and control temp, but a thermostat would be killer!

Thanks!
