Hello there guys and gals. Now that I got my first shipment of goodies to start building my grow box, while I wait "patiently" for my seeds, I guess I can start my journal. So here are the specifics, as of now.

STRAIN: Sweet Seeds Auto Black Cream
MEDIUM: Soil (Roots Organic/FF Happy Frog) in 3 gallon roots pots
LIGHT: 250 watt CFL (19/5 light cycle)
NUTRIENT: General Organics (GO box)

I will be building a grow box, from some sturdy Cardboard boxes, I collected from work. I will start building it today, and taking plenty of pics, for this diy project. I am estimating that the grow space will be about 3'6" of vertical grow space, and 2 ft of horizontal grow space. I will have a sort of hybrid scrog/lst set up. I will not be scrogging so much, as i will be mainly using the "screen" to give better coverage.

I was originally going to do 2 boxes, with Blue Automazar, and do a side by side test with the 12/1 & #/# light cycles. But me wife, decided that I needed to spoil her a little, So I spent part of my budget on her.:Sssssmokin: And, she decided that she wanted to try a different strain, so after politely agreeing to her "requests," I am now down to one grow box, and Black Cream seeds.

But alas, I will still be doing my side by side, just not this round.

With my soil, I have a 5 gallon roots bag, and a 3 gallon Happy Frog bag. I have had great success in the past, with photo plants, mixing these two soils, in this ratio, with my GO nutes. Did I arrive at this particular formula after a series of trials? NOPE!!! Those were the only two bags left, one day while I was at the hydro store, getting supplies.

So here is my first ever pic for these forums, with more to come.

Grow Box Part 1

I ran out of Ducky Tape, ugh.... And yes, SHE told me so!!:slaps:

so I will post what I have so far, and take you along with me as I build this box. I got this particular idea from a youtube video by Buds McGee. I have modified it a little according to my needs, though.

First, I cut 2 of the flaps off each box, and prepped them to be put together.
IMG_20140919_163404181_HDR.jpg
I then tack the other flaps so that they are resting on top of the sides.

Once I have done this with both boxes, I put them together, with more Ducky Tape, so that they look like......

This...... well damn, i accidentally deleted the better of these two pics, ugh.:slaps:
Anyhoo, i then tape off the spot for the door flaps, and proceed to make my doors, unfortunately, I had a few work issues distract me, so I forgot to snap pics of that step.

I then take my utility knife, and cut along the corners of both sides of the box, with the final result being one bigger box. I keep the flaps attached, and let them hang down, and against the back, for a little extra support.
(there is this little voice in my head right now, asking me why I just didn't buy a bigger box to begin with, or a tent. ):Woozy..?:
I guess I just like doing things the hard way.....

I then took two pieces of 1/8" white board, and cut one in half, long ways, and fit them in the box.

I then took one of my fans and proceeded to mount it as the intake fan. It is a 4.5" fan and a CD is perfect to outline the hole. I took a small allen wrench, and used it to punch holes in the cardboard and white board. Now that the fan is mounted, I will make a light trap for it.

Well, that is all for now, until I can get to the store to get more Ducky Tape, and another sheet of White Board.

Happy Growing,

:Sharing One:

Hi MrWeeds. Looking forward to your grow. Nice strain! Hope it all goes well for you with the cardboard box build [emoji106]

Nice DIY there man. Keep it simple! Keeping the wife happy makes things a lot easier in the long run ;)

you REALLY REALLY want to keep a close eye on the temp of the BOX it self. Cardboard is flammable. And any material that can burn, will catch fire more easily if it has been exposed to high temperatures for long periods of time. I very much understand being on a budget, but please re-think using this for a cab. Use an old pc case, an old file cabinet, or go to a junk shop or auction house. I just bought a 6ftx2ftx2ft cabinet at an auction for $2.00!! A 250 watt CFL will get hot enough to be dangerous.

It gets tough when shes pregnant and super hormonal. Sometimes u just feel like sticking a big cola in her mouth and firing it up!!!!

real nice DIY will be following good luck!

I agree with Pop a cardboard box isn't the best choice to grow in, first scenario is fire as cardboard will catch light a lot easier than say wood all it will take is a spark or two. Second thing I would be concerned about would be the humidity will be soaked up be the box and weaken it.....sorry to be a spoil sport but I'm looking out for you.

Hey Mr Weeds!

Sounds like you and old lady are off to a start!! :D
You wont be dissapointed with Black Cream from sweet seeds - she really was delicious!!

That cardboard box fills me full of fear too!! We like to keep our members safe, so have to echo some of the Really good advice :s

Worst cases are it catches on fire :(
It get's too humid and collapses and then catches fire :((
Or it gets too humid - it doesnt collapse but gets mouldy and you get mouldy buds (perhaps) :(((

My first cab was a plastic Tool Box from Homebase - about £70 and i used my extremely limited diy skills to attach the lights, cuts the vents and attach an out take fan and carbon filter. It wasn't idea as it was bit short in height - but it was safe and grew almost enough buds for me! :)

Hit us up if you need some alternative ideas
Again - just looking out for you and yours

:d5:

I bought my grow tent with free rope ratchets for £29.99 new on eBay. Might be worth having a look on there if you change your mind about your cardboard box build. Real good quality too. They're cheap and if you gotta move or take a break from growing then they're easy to take apart and pack up. They even fit in a long sports holdall when in pieces. Think there's some grow tents that actually come with their own carry bags.
