New Grower Need advice on photo plants

What's up AFN!

I've got two photo sensitive strains going now (ran out of auto seeds), and it's a whole new learning process coming from autos. They're getting huge, and I'm gearing up to switch to 12/12. I'm also trying my hand at scrog technique. I'm looking for any and all advice, as it seems there's major potential with these plants.


You can see that they're popping up through the screen now. The purple haze on the right responded to FIM cut technique perfectly and hardly needs a screen for an even canopy. The cheese plant's main stalk just wont quit. I let both plants veg out longer so some of the other branches could approach the screen. Other than both being FIM'd once, I haven't used any other cutting/training techniques, or trimmed anything but dead shade leaves.
I repotted them about 10 days ago, from 3 gallon to 7 gallon smart pots.

I'm just looking for general guidance here. If these were your plants, what would you do?

Do they need their undersides thinned out? Have I let them veg too much for my space? Etc, etc.


Any tips, tricks, ideas, criticism, etc is welcome. I need AFN's help, again, to grow some awesome buds.

Man that looks good. I think your space is going to be jam packed though. How long have you been vegging them? I'm only on my 2nd grow and while i'm doing photos now, my first grow were autos. I just switched to 12/12 yesterday after about 35 days from seed.

By my count, it's been approx 40 days since I soaked the seeds. Yeah, my space is gonna be packed (too packed?). I just hope I can use the scrog net to keep it even as possible. Vertical space is not an issue, but I only have so much horizontal real estate.

That's why I'm wondering if I should thin anything out... and if so, how. I've watched videos and read articles but it's overwhelming, and these plants don't wanna wait. That's why I'm just waiting for a photo pro to drop by and take a theoretical crack at it.

Sup frog, i scrog photos, your pics look good. If it was me i would drop that scrog down about 6 inches and bend them branches down under the scrog, it will give you a larger top canopy. Once that is done. Give it about a week, then trim everything under that scrog line.

Edit - i can see your scrog is already filled, so i don't know if dropping the scrog down will help much.

WHen i scrog out photos, just for an example... say the photo is 4 foot tall. I will smash it down to only about a foot tall by super cropping the plant, and stick the scrog on top, then let it go for about another week so i can see what will or won't make it to the top. Then i knock everything off under the scrog line.

Lookin good, I think your space is going to be jammed as well. The only thing I would say if it gets too outta control is some sort of Bud LST method. Tying the buds and bending them out of the way. if you have a pretty even canpoy then you might think about removing the scrog screen and just tying all of the plants down, this is once again if you are just absolutely running out of space. At this moment I would say you are doing great and to just keep doing what you are.

I have 10+ years expereince growing Photos and you have what appear to be very healthy and happy plants. Outgrowing your space is always a better problem to have than most because you can virtually always get a litttttttle more room out of your space by tying branches and raising lights etc.

The best advice I can give is this, spend as much time with your plants as humanly possible. You will start to see there growth patterns and what they like and dont like. Literally WATCH them grow it will tell you a lot(or at least this has been my experince) Again keep at it and way to go!

lykaboss, thanks for the reply. I thought about lowering the screen, but there's a problem. The cheese plant in the left was FIM'D a little while after I cut the haze (in an attempt to even out the differing growth patterns... I know, multiple strain problems). The cheese plant can't bend at any lower point. It's very rigid up until the cut, right below the screen.

What would you do?

Yo derek420colorado! The screen does seem redundant for the bushy haze, but I think the cheese is gonna need to be tamed. Individually tying the buds is an attractive idea though, and if scrog gets too confusing/cramped, I'll switch up the technique.

Would you recommend going to 12/12 immediately? The plants seem more than recovered from the transplant, and are going through an obvious growth spurt. *shrug*

Flip immediately to 12/12
Remember that Photoperiod plants will stretch for the first 3 weeks or so and can get anywhere from 1 to 3 x their size. At the end of week 2 of flower I would start shaping them up and cutting out all the waste. Do a little everyday and it won't stress them at all. Photos are a lot more resilient then autos... They love a good spanking every now and then :BottomBeater:

Just saw your edit. That helps a lot. If the cheese wasn't so rigid, I could probably squish it down, but it's too substantial now. However, I'm interested in the "knock everything off under the scrog line."

If I was to keep the net as it is, when should I get rid of branches that aren't up to screen level? Do I remove entire branches all the way to the main stalk?
