Some people do cut them. Esp if they over shadow bud sites. Others say it can stress the plant. Taking off a few lower dead fan leaves shouldnt do much damage as long as you dont get carried away.

The first one is the main cola of my best plant. . The 4th one is a cola also but that plant stretched quite a bit so it's a bit spindly with thinner buds, the others are just bud sites on some of the other girls.I gave them a a quick trim mate and a general tidy up, can't wait to harvest these. . End of the month, possibly early May (latest)
Sounds like a good move the t5 wouldnt be able to compete with the hps at the same distance. Was looking into some of those for seed starting/ side lighting myself. Maybe when i have more room
I did have it a little lower, but I felt the two plants under the T5 weren't getting the full benefit of the HPS, T5 slightly shadowing them from the HPS.
So opted for the side lighting. . Hopefully the buds underneath the canopy will fatten up
