good to meet you fluke, Hope you have some good luck with those autos and be able to smoke some wicked Dank homegrown ganga. Ive never seen the kittly litter thing done before so Im curious as if it will help any and if so would that be a good thing to do outside around my plants with a layer of mulch overtop of it all? See you around Fluke take it easy. K.I.M.

The kitty litter I've used is a special brand available here made from danish red clay with a high content of diatomaceous earth. It is only present in specific locations in Denmark.

It is used both mixed in as a soil amendment and as a top layer to both keep critters from setting up shop in your pots and to keep the top layer of soil from drying out too much. It supposedly both improves drainage and holds moisture in itself.
People often say it is similar to perlite, apart from the fact that the clay har more "substance", weight.

If I'd topped my pot up with perlite it would have been blown all over my grow space by the fan, heheh..

In any case it is important that the cat sand is of a NON clumping kind :)

Fluke Welcome to the family .....:Grow & Show..:....and some:karma Cloud: for your girls

Welcome, Fluke! :tiphat:
I haven't seen the kitty litter thing before, either, so I'll keep an eye peeled!
And for the record, I'm a huge fan of DE. Talk about a critter gitter!
Happy growing, Sister! :peace:

In my case I'm mostly hoping the top layer will keep my soil more uniformly moist, between the light and the fan the top part of my soil dried out something terrible, while still being quite wet from about one third down into the pot.

Unless I got some nasty surprises hidden with my (store bought) soil I don't think I will have a problem with little critters (knock on wood), so I'm hoping that particular effect of DE is one I won't be needing... :)
