Hey seasick 
Yeah start a new journal for the new plants mate - we can see it through from the start. Pop that john innes number 2 in the cupboard for now, don't think you're going to need it. How big are your pots? Presuming you got about 10 litre pots, try and mix 30 - 40% perlite in there to make it very nice and light, the give it a nice big watering with de-chlorinated water ph'd to 6.4
Fill your pot right to the top with soil, don't compact it hard - keep it nice and airey. (the water will drop it's level from the top a little)
This will be the pot you grow from start to finish with.
As for germing, you know the score ^_^ (but just for completion - "if it were me" i'd pop the seed straight in the soil about 3mm down, throw some loose soil over the top, cover with the top of a coke bottle, and stick it under the light... the pot will already be wet from the watering you gave it before popping your seed in, just give a light spray circle where the seed was popped)
