I've spent a lot of time on http://skunkpharmresearch.com/ lately. A truly top notch site with articles based on science, by professionals. I decided to try their test method for making a batch of oil. Now, I've seen other post where they cook a while then cool, then cook again, etc. It didn't make sense to me so I've done just straight cooking for x hours and thats it.
What you see in my jar is probably close to 2 ounces of pre-dried bud and trim, from all the various plants I grew this summer. Close to an ounce of bud alone, ( you can tell by the seeds that escaped me...lol! ) I put it in the Mason Jar, then filled it with olive oil, letting it soak into the plant matter for a bit and adding more, then shaking it to get the oil quickly thru the canna. When it was soaked, I added enough oil to bring ot about an inch above the plant matter.
I scored a double boiler at an auction a while back, and I like it much better than my crockpot for cooking oil, you've got much better temp control, and you can't burn your oil.
I boiled the water in both pans, placed the top pan on the base pan, and put the jar in the top. As per skunkpharmresearch, I tighten the lid a bit, but not tightly and cooked it for 6 hours. I occasionally shook or stirred it.
After 6 hours I let it cool on the counter, then placed it in the fridge for the night.
This morning, I slowly warmed it, then placed it in the double boiler again for 2 hours. Took it out and let it cool. It is now boiling again, for the last, 6 hour session. I'm thinking this should be some decently potent oil....we'll see! :Medibles:
