Hi, Thanks for the welcome.

I’ve just joined the site I’ve been looking around for a few days and decided to register.

I typed the wrong size of my cabinet. It’s only 3 foot high. I’m going to get a tent instead

Thanks for the reply,

You’re right ! My heads about to explode because I’m reading too much and trying to do everything at once.

I’ve got lights already, they’re Viparspectra r300 led’s and I plan to grow in soil.

I only plan on growing 1 plant at a time until I can figure out how to grow properly. I’ve built a cabinet that is 2x2x5 and will be using a 5 gallon fabric air pot.

I understand how to germinate - using the paper towel method. What I’m not sure about is how I should be watering.

Do I need to use ph up/down to get my water to 6.5 or can I leave the water in an open container overnight ?

Don’t apologise for the questions you’ve asked, I’ll let you off because I’ve propably just give you a headache with my questions

This is the most friendly canna forum on the net, if I do say so myself and you can ask any and all questions here without fear of being trolled flamed or otherwise treated like crap! All we ask in return, is that you spread what you learn here to others whenever possible! :vibe:

I use tap water myself and I always bubble with an air stone for 24 hours. Whether you bubble or not, always ph prior to watering. As far as watering, (and I believe this to be the biggest mistake made by new growers), you always want to give your plants a good dry period. Weigh your pot when dry and then again when wet, if you have a scale and can keep track like that. Better yet, just get use to picking up the pots and feeling when it's time, or just pick up a moisture probe. Anything else I can be of help with, feel free to ask! :headbang:

You and me both! I've been reading for over a month, and along the way been purchasing items based on what I think will be best for me.

Best site I've found, and only one that I signed up to be a member! You will find tons of great info, and lots of help along the way.

@Lordhonkyconcord Welcome to AFN. I am a hydro grower but have done soil in the past. I do recommend a microbe inoculant for soil and perhaps some coco or perlite to open it up a bit.

Hi everyone,

I’m planning my first grow and thought I’d join the site to learn the basics before I get started.

Get ready for a million questions !

Get ready for about 10 million answers as there is more than one way to grow a cannabis plant. I am an old organic farmer with lots of practice outdoors with flowers and vegetables. IMHO do not use the paper towel method of germination. I know lots of people do it but if you ever looked at the tap root under a microscope you will see hundreds of root hairs that become the laterals that feed the plant. They grow into the fibers of the paper towel and are stripped off every time the towel or seed is moved - ouch! In soil I would use a Rapid Rooter or equivalent Just plant the seed 1/2" deep keep moist (not wet) and warm 78°F. It will grow if viable. Then in a big pot like that you can simulate starting in a smaller pot by watering only a small circle around the rooter and a little deeper. then every couple of days expand the watered area out and down so that by the end of the 2nd week you are watering the entire pot.

It seems like the best place for me and I’m enjoying what I’m reading so far, the bits that make sense anyway.

I’ve got some ph up/down and a ph pen is on the way.

The moisture probe sounds like the best method for me to start with. That way I know I’m getting it right.

Question time ! .....
How long is a good dry period ? Or is that something I’d have to learn ?
And am I right in thinking I should ph my tap water anywhere between 6.2 and 6.8 ?
