Hey Andy, can you give me a link to an explanation of distilled water destroying glass ? It just sounds unlikely to me.

Hey!
Just checking in!
Looks like your in good hands for sure.
I'll just add some positive energy and lay some of these :karma Cloud: :karma Cloud: on you!
Peace and happy growing my friend!

Here you go. Care and feeding of your pH probe from Hanna Instruments.

Care and Storage of a pH Electrode
pH electrodes do not last forever!
The life of your pH electrode is not infinite. A number of factors affect the life span of
your pH electrode. The higher the temperature that the electrode is used at, the more
extreme the pH, how often the bulb dries out and needs to be rehydrated, how roughly it
s used; all these factors and more shortenthe life span of your electrode. An electrode
hat is well maintained and cared for can last up to 2 years, one that is not well
maintained will not last as long, and one that is well maintained will not last significantly
onger.
Storage of the pH electrode when not in use.
The pH electrode bulb needs to be moist at all times. When you are done with the
electrode pour electrode storage solution into the cap that came with the electrode and put
he cap over the bulb of the electrode. Keep the cap on until next use. If the electrode is
being stored for a long time you may want to check the cap to be sure the storage solution
s still in the cap and keeping the bulb moist. DO NOT STORE THE pH
ELECTRODE IN DISTILLED WATER.
Storing the pH electrode in distilled water
will shorten the life of your pH electrode.
If you do not have electrode storage solution use pH 4 buffer solution. If you have neither
electrode storage solution or pH 4 buffer solution you can use pH 7 buffer solution for a
short time.
Rinsing the pH electrode between measurements.
You should rinse your pH electrode between measurements. This can be done with
distilled water or rinsing with a sample of the next solution to be measured. Using both
distilled water and then a sample of the next solution is also a good way to rinse the pH
electrode between measurements.
pH electrode fill hole
Some pH electrodes have a fill hole for refreshing the electrolyte in the pH electrode;
other pH electrodes do not have a fill hole. If your pH electrode has a fill hole the fill hole
cap should be removed during calibration and use. This allows for the correct amount of
reference electrolyte to flow into the sample. Replace the fill hole cap when done with the
electrode at the end of the day.

It isn't a matter of distilled water destroying glass. It causes ions to leach out of the bulb and renders the glass electrode faulty over time. pH pens and similar devices use a glass electrode with a special membrane (see the storage section): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_electrode

Now I'm not saying that distilled water will immediately blow up your meter, but it will degrade performance over time. Storage solution is cheap and it's made for a reason. My pH pen costs $90 so I'm not going to ruin it trying to save $10 on KCl solution.

Hey steeli. This lamp has done I think 2-3 grows already. Hope it will last for atleast 2 more. And yeah I plan to use like 2x2m space or maybe 3x3, depends on how big they will get. I think I should probably buy another light but atm i have no money. So I will have to make it somehow work with what i've got. Yeah I gave them nutes abit early but seems all plants are doing fine except that onefor now.

hey willie thanks for droping by, ill read that tomorrow(its 4am here). Family is helping me out alot here :D

Thanks for the PH pen advice I think i will jsut buy calibrator to make sure it works properly! I paid 45€ for my pen so I dont intent to buy new one anytime soon! THe one that I have is Adwa pH Meter AD-12 I think:)
Cheers PPL

Hey pop, storing a pH probe in distilled or RO water will eventually destroy the glass membrane. I don't know of any sensor company that recommends it. pH probe storage solution is a KCl mixture which is far different from distilled water, not just a gimmick to make you buy something else. If you don't have storage solution, storing it in calibration solution is preferable to anything else.

Ok thank you!

Thanks for Ph pen info. So my Ph pen must be crap then since the instructions don't tell me it has to always be moist ?

Here's a pic of it :

Yeah, those generic pens don't usually have much in the way of instructions. I guess they figure most people look at them as disposable items and don't plan on maintaining them over the long term. My HM model has a built in cap that holds the storage solution:

I will say that when I had to shut down my growing unexpectedly, it got packed away and I wasn't even sure exactly where it was for around a year and a half. So of course the probe dried up completely during that time. When I got it back out and put it in some storage solution for a few days, I found that it was still quite accurate. The biggest difference was that it took much longer to settle on a number than previously. What may have taken 10-15 seconds before took 30-45 seconds after being stored improperly. I went ahead and ordered a new probe for it anyway, but kept the old one since it was still accurate if a bit slow...

My pen had instructions and the solution with it. But I lost it in these years. I used this pen for our pool all the time too.

Can anyone help with picking which calibrator to take, with Ph 4.01 or 7.01... I realy dont have a clue what the difference is.

I will order some Red Poison auto from Sweet seeds. And I intend to buy either BioBizz soil. ( should i go with light mix or all mix? )

The measurments are today abit better I think. Still I wont transplant thoes babys since they grow quiet well atm.

Im uploading pen pics, flowers pics, and soil pics today so you guys can have a better look at whats going on.

Peace borthers 8D

Day 16

So its day 16, babys are growing nice, I think lol. So I took few pics from the soil bag, pic of my PH pen and pics of my ladys.

Thats it fellas!

Thanks Andy that's interesting detail - makes me wonder if itss a special glass composite or something ...

Nice pics Shax, i'm well jealous of your space :)
