Grow Mediums Oh No..BayLee420 Going Hydro

The growth is amazing. Absolutely amazing. The roots are coming out of the 5" net pots on all sides. Ivory white roots with nice fine root hairs. I have always done soil; to see these roots growing really puts the cannabis growing into perspective. "Feed the roots; not the plant." is as plain as day. They are only under 250W Super HPS now. Perfect node distance. Two weeks in the DWC/Top and [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] is over 4 inches tall. [HASHTAG]#3[/HASHTAG] is chugging along.
Grow Area:
Temp 78F
RH 48%
Reservoir 66F
Den's Room Temp 65F

Perfect growing conditions.

This West Coast Horticulture is suppose to be pH perfect as well. Read the fine print and only water plus 7.5 pH needs to be pH'd. Going to add some cal to the next res change. @Duckster, how many ml to a gallon do you go? 5ml to a gallon seems a good start?

I use 1ml/L, so about 7 teaspoons for 9 gallons.

Add enough to your base water to bring the starting ppm to between 125 - 150, then add your nutes. My RO is 12 ppm and 3 ml per gallon gets me to 125. Too much calcium can be an issue as well. It can lock out the nutrients and you'll start getting what looks like a P deficiency. What I run into in rdwc is the occasional strain related magnesium deficiency. Some just need more than others. I treat those with epsom salts rather than adding more cal/mag.

A great piece of information. This probably explains what happened the last few weeks of my last grow. It started with what I thought was a cal/mag def. I increased the cal/mag dosage. The problem then began to look like a serious P def complete with the brown-black dry crispy leaves. A bit of this :slap: for ya Muddy. You da man!

If you can get it have a look at the canna mono series seperate calcium and magnesium no added nitrogen

When I purchased the West Coast line. I got the entire series. They have a separate Ca and a separate Mg. I used 5ml to a gallon of Ca this last res change. I spray the foliage lightly with a weak solution of Epsom Salt to give the girls a Mg/S boost. It was good to see @Muddy confirm my Epsom Salt foliar regimen.

This DWC/Top Feed set up has brought me closer to what Ganja growing is all about. You can see almost immediately the results. Plus all the great advise is......Great.

Plus @Muddy is on the "team". Can't get any better than that.

I add it to my system as opposed to foliar. I'm using a H&G product called Magic Green as my foliar. I dissolve the epsom salts in a quart or so of water and add it directly to my system. Usually at the rate of 1 tablespoon per 25 gallons of solution, which raises the ppm by about 50. I don't use it all the time, only when I see a mag deficiency.

Thanks Duckster. I got that from the techs at H&G. I had added too much cal/mag and started to see what I thought was a cal deficiency, so added more, which made it worse and then had me thinking it was a P deficiency. Plus my pH was out of wack so I ended up calling them. Their tech support is very good and they really set me straight on how to properly run these Current Culture systems. They use CC systems to develop and test their nutes and were the recommended nute line before CC started manufacturing their own.

Did some changes to the DIY DWC/Top Feed Hydro setup. I have abandoned the Top Feed. Just going pure DWC. Reworked the setup and took out the drip pump. I'll do the Top Feed when I get the DWC down pat. The drip system is a breeding ground for bad bacteria and there is really no need to have it on this grow. Plus there is really no consensus on feed schedules and it's just a pain in the ass.

Secondly. I had a biofilm/brown alge issue. No off smell. Could be light leakage due to the fact that the 5" net holes were over sized and there is a chance that this may of been an issue. The system is running with 6 X 2" air stones; reservoir temps at 60F-68F. Couldn't figure out why. I got some Hydroguard and stopped using Photosynthesis Plus as per the Hydro Store owner. She mentioned that it is the wrong bacilli to introduce in the system. She mentioned that the Photosynthesis Plus is good, but not as a hydro addition in a DWC setup. Also she said to not use Floralicious Plus in the reservoir as it will create the roots to stain (sure enough it did) and it's a good chance that it also maybe an issue in the biofilm along with the Photosynthesis Plus. A double whammy. Floralicious Plus is good as a foliar spray or use in soil, but do not add to reservoir. She said to keep your reservoir nutrients clear.

I cleaned the reservoir with a good amount of Hydrogen Peroxide and water. Flushed the air stones with the same solution. Rinsed the system out real good. Re-did the nutrient solution with the Hydroguard and Pro-Tekt. It's been going now for a full 24 hours and no slime.

That's what's been happening.

Are you using hydroguard or anything to help with that? Light leaks suck but the hydroguard can help..
