Grow Mediums pH changes in DWC (Bubbler)

Hey sorry about the root rot but I have a ray of light for you!!!! Your more then likly seeing clear floating (Snot) in your Rez and at some point on your roots if not no worries this will fix anything root related and ph changes Brew a EWC here is a post I dug up on how to make it it.

-----------------------------------------I did not Create this post and can not take credit------------------------------------

*The recipe is really simple. Start with non-chlorinated water. I make 2 gallons at a time, but you can easily adjust the additives for whatever amount you wish to make. Now put the water into a bucket and throw in a couple air stones. The more air the better. You want the water to be almost turbulent from the bubbles. Now, add 15-30ml of aquashield and about 1/4-1/2 scoop of the ZHO powder. You will be breeding these into the billions so it doesn't really matter how much you start with, just don't overdo it. Now take an old sock or pantyhose and fill it with about 2 handfuls of EWC or Ancient Forest. Tie off the sock and place it in the water above an air stone, or better yet, feed an air stone down into the sock itself. If you want, you can just throw the EWC directly into the water and strain it out later with cheesecloth or even an aquarium net. Next, add about a tablespoon of molasses to wake up the microbes and give them something to eat. We will only be feeding the microbes in this tea; never add food for the microbes to the res itself. It's okay if the bennies in the res starve. You will be replacing them every few days. Now let the tea bubble at room tempeture for 48 hours. It can be used after 24, but will be more active and diverse at 48. If you use EWC you will probably notice a foam eventually, this is normal. After 48 hours you can store the tea in the fridge where it will stay fresh for about 10 days. Once it starts to go bad it will develop an odor. If you ever detect an odor from your tea, throw it out and make a new batch. Fresh tea can have a range of smells from earthy to mossy to shroomy. Bad tea smells like gym socks, fecal matter, or decay.

Initially, add about 1 cup to your res for every gallon of water, and then add 1 cup total every 3 days after. If you can, pour a little over the base of the stalk to inoculate the root crown. Your water might get a little cloudy but your roots will stay white and stimulated. When you use tea and practice proper res maintenance you can feel confident your roots will be healthy. By multiplying the microbes this way your products should last a great deal longer. Once you have eradicated slime and simply want protection from future outbreaks, adjust the tea dosage to 1 cup per 10 gallons about once per week.

if you do that you will be all good !

One question I don't see has been asked is what the strength of your feeds are? Generally in hydro if the pH is going up and the ppm down, it's a sign that the plants are underfed. Conversely, if the pH is going down and the ppm up, they are overfed. I also don't see the ppm of your water, only the pH. If you water is hard, the ppm is probably high. If that's the case, you may need to switch over to a different water source as Pop suggested. Without knowing the ppms in hydro you're just shooting in the dark.

The root rot could be caused by high res temps. The ideal range is about 65 to 70 degrees.

Hey Muddy,

The problem is my EC meter has not yet arrived (ebay seller didn't send it and never notified me) so I am blind for now. The problem is that since the root rot started, nothing seems to matter. For example the pH would go from 6.0 to 7.5 in a matter of 5-6 hours. After 24 hours the water becomes brown and smells.

Right now I am trying to keep the temperature low (as you suggested), and I am changing the water daily, plus adding 30ml H2O2 every day. I am waiting for some "root rot" formula in few days and some extra pH down so I hope I can save it...

Hey Ramone515 What you have there is a cyanobacteria, you cant kill it with h2o2 but it helps to slow it down. There is a eazy way to get rid of it. First you do need to Clean the roots off good take them to the kitchen sink use the sprayer get all loose dead roots off. Then soak the plant in a h202 solution for 12 hrs or so no more then 24. Clean everything in your room with a high bleach/water I mean everything Hoses,Pumps,Rez, Anything that hit the water except air stones those you want to soak in h202. While that is cleaning/soaking you need to brew a tea made up of 2 handfulls of EWC or Ancient forest, and some Mycogrow the amount per gallon of water it says and you add a tabelspoon of molasses, and bubble the shat in a sock with 2 gallons water for about 12 hrs while your system is cleaning and your plants soak after about 12 hrs of h202 soak for the little ones take the tea add about 1 cup to your res for every gallon of water, and then add 1 cup total every 3 days after. You will be all set

And use apple cider vinegar for a ph down I have used it for years ( Helps keep it organic) and that way I know what I am adding also not sure if you can get it in your area of the world but Sulfuric acid is a great ph down just like 2 drips into 50 gal water does the trick and it holds well

That stuff should work. But the tea is something that is needed in our DWC world. The issue with heat will be hard to deal with as you have a small rez and it sits in the room with your lights I went through the same issue I had to use ice packs and sit my tub on them. I now have a rez set up outside that feeds my bubble tub in the grow I use Ice packs to cool it but only have to add them one time a day now to keep rez at 68 in room. I know if you cant do like i did you can but a thermo chip and make a easy chiller that sticks to the side of your rez

H202 never did anything significant for me, but baterial tea definitely did. Reading the entire Heisenberg thread brewing tea is highly educational and saved my girls last year. Since them I've been using it as a preventive and root boostrer, and I can't live without my aerobic army

Never had a problem since.

Well the tea seems to be the solution, but I can't get any Botanicare products here.

For now I am treating with daily doses of H2O2 AND changing the water every single day. I can see new root growth and the plant continues to grow (but slowly) so I will fight for a few hours to keep it in range.

Questions:

- Should root rot cause extremely basic pH? When I sleep at night or at work the pH can rise from 6.0 to 8.0 in a matter of 8-10 hours. When I am home I have to add drops of pH down every few minutes.

- Advanced nutrients Piranha, I've read it may help, anyone had any experience?

- This might sound stupid, what about a quick bath in chlorine? A solution with a little 5% chlorine (like, common bleach) can kill every organism in ~3 minutes. What if I put the roots in chlorine for 3 minutes, then wash them, and back to a fresh tank. Could that help or would I just kill my plant?
