I've done a handful of reading on this subject and I finally narrowed it down to two PH Meters that I'm looking at purchasing. I don't want to have to purchase twice, so I'd like to hear recommendations and personal experiences. I'm looking at the Oakton EcoTester PH 2 and the Bluelab BLU2210 PH Pen. Is one brand better than another? Is it worth the extra change for the Bluelab pen? Keep in mind that a budget is always nice to stick to, but I'm willing to spend a little more where it's actually needed. Also, is it really worth buying a cleaning kit? Or can I just purchase calibration solution and rinse it out in the sink?

Ive used the oakton ph2 for almost 2years and never had a problem. It always stayed calibrated and was right on the money when using the calibrating solution.

I say always get good calibration solution and the cleaning solutions too. The better you take care of your electrode the longer it will last and more accurate it will stay. Proper and scheduled calibration and cleaning and storing is key IMO.
I only have experience with the top of the line Hanna pen, the black one. It's a wonderful tool to have, but I trust Nammy all day on his opinion.
:D Money talks when it comes to good gear. If possible, don't skimp!

My choice would be a Hanna Combo. Not only does it check pH, it's also does EC and PPM, with automatic temperature compensation. The ability to check and monitor your PPM can be a very useful tool to have in determining the strength of the nutes you are feeding and for checking your base water. Yes, get the the cleaning and storage solutions. Deposits, especially if you're using chemical nutes, will build up on the glass electrode and eventually the calibration will drift. Monthly use of the cleaning solution will prevent that from happening. The storage solution keeps the electrode moist when stored. If the electrode dries out you'll need to follow the initial instructions for soaking to reactivate it properly.
