Grow Mediums Preparing for an Alien RDWC invasion...

Last grow my water was 24 almost all the time never had problems and the roots looked nice!
Place the airpump in a cooler place or make a construction so the airpump blow cold air in the pots ! Best of luck friend!

22oC and holding :yay:... lets see if I can tame it!

Hi Mr Groff,
Love your set up, I have an Amazon aeroponics set up that I have used with photos but my present auto grow I am doing in coco but I do like the look of these DWC set ups.
Im figuring you are in the UK ? I am too, down South and I have had unreal temperature problems on this grow, I have a well ventilated set up but because our house is so well insulated, double glazing, loft insulation, wall insulation etc the temperatures in our house are often 32C plus upstairs where my grow room is, even hotter in the loft so I just can not suck cool air from anywhere to drop the temperatures in my grow room.
My 1st few weeks were not very good with these autos, I assumed it was down to the high temps as I have read many times that 26C should be the maximum temp at which to grow an auto.
26C eh ? I have not once managed to get any lower than 27C, I have one of these thermometers that records the min and max temps so I know where it gets to at night and 27C is it.
I am usually at about 30 -32C so figured this grow would be a disaster.
Now I realise that my early problems were down to overdoing the nutes, I was feeding them as I would a photo strain (there is a lesson in doing a bit more homework 1st. D'oh !) and ended up with brown dying leaves all over, as soon as each set of leaves got large they yellowed, browned and died.
After realising my problem and flushing, flushing, flushing I now, at about 7 weeks have very healthy plants in full flower and packing on the buds beautifully.
But wait, I thought autos could not cope with high temps ?
I also thought cal/mag was a prerequisite of autos particularly when growing under LED as I am ?
Have I stumbled on something here ? Keep the temperatures higher to force transpiration and the deficiencies usually associated with cal/mag are negated ?
That would certainly seem to be the case with my present grow, it shall be interesting to see how, during Winter as the temps drop whether I start to have cal/mag issues.
Forgive me if it appears I am high jacking your thread, that is not the intention.
I am 'that mate' that flops into your sofa, tokes a few and then can waffle for England about our favourite plants.
I am always interested when a Golden Rule is broken with favourable results.
I shall be following this grow with interest as much as anything to see how your plants progress with the high temps but also because I am very interested in these DWC units and of course any thread using the amazing DP seeds is always worth following.
Good luck with your grow, I am sending positive energy your way.

edit; forgot to say I keep 25litre containers of water in my grow room to give it time to evaporate the nasties and that sits at 24-26C.

Auto's love high temps just as much as photo's. You are 100% correct, there is a tendency for cal mag defs using LEDs. 32oC would be my red zone though. At 30 they complain, but if they're happy with EC and pH they'll just drink extra and reward you. Personally, I aim for 26-28oC, no more than 10ºC difference to night time.

Here is where this system could excel, if I manage to get up "ground" temps to heat and cool, while keeping the roots at 18oC. In many cases one can play around with even colder root temps at the end of flower to bring out the purples and pinks, but for now I'd be happy with only sub 22C.

But back to your issues, using silicon really really really helps all round, especially with temps. You can even foliar spray handsomely, and it will coat the leaf helping retaining moisture... use a surfacant in this mix for added performance.

thanks for the positive vibes mate :smokebuds:

Day 3

Work in progress.

On the menu today we have a tough choice. The left out bean, still in my DIY Root Riot propagator, today looks smashing!
This little bugger looked horrid yesterday!! Today it looks great! I "discarded" it, but now having second thoughts... I could still swap it out... I think it is now officially the fastest growing plant, but I could be dreaming...

Here is our little mutant friend. What do you think? Keep it or swap it?

Looking good did you get the temp down using the isolation?

No no... frozen water bottles. The silver helps keep out radiated heat from the light, while the insulation itself is a heat barrier keeping cold in, and hot out... Now you got me thinking that maybe a double layer of insulation would be quite beneficial... but let see how it goes for now.

Temps still at 22ºC after 2h without bottles in the header pot

Thankyou for the advice about silicon, I always use it in my aeroponics unit but was not sure if I could use it safely in coco so I shall finish typing this, put on the kettle and go give my plants a foliar spray.
Ref your mutant; I have some weird mutations on 2 of my Dark Devils but they are flowering perfectly so it seems to have no effect on end product.
Unless it is taking up valuable space that could be used by normal plants I would keep the poor little thing going, who knows, maybe the Bud God will reward your act of mercy.
lol

Wouldnt it be better if you bought a waterchiller? I think its more inline with the rest of your NICE setup!

Indeed. Try to save up for that... have a few things ready to ebay to fund that. Hailea 100a should suffice, but its 260€, a I'd need two of them... I didn't plan for it as I thought it wouldn't be an issue... But yes yes, top priority right now.

Water temp went up to 23, but only about half an hour ago, so I think my insulation is rocking!! Room temp is 30oC. I also need better exhaust fan in this tent, but that surely will only be necessary next spring. In about a month ambient temps will drop significantly.

I have to leave now, bottles in the freezer for a few hours now, lets see when I come back what it reads and if I can manually fight this for now...
