New Grower Pro Mix soil

I'm thinking about changing soils and I want something I can get locally. One of the local retailers is carrying this stuff now and I see some pretty good reviews on it. Anyone have any experience with it. Thanks

Just curious, what have you been using? And I've only heard good things about Pro Mix. Personally, I started with Fox Farm Ocean Forest (and have since stuck with it), and use that for regular house plants as well, and everything loves it and thrives in it. I've also heard of their Happy Frog soil being used with good results.

I am a user of ProMix, like it very much.:smoke: If you choose to go with it, try to keep the Ph around 6.2-6.4.

Thanks for the replies. Right now and for about the last 4 years or more I have been using MG Moisture Control-I hear your groans already-with really some good results but as I get more involved with autos I'm getting kind of tired of the time release nutes. Anyhow its time to move on

Groans indeed! My main concern would be what makes it "moisture controlled" because I remember some article about how water retention crystals released some nasty chemicals into the soil/plants growing in the soil.

I don't know what makes it work but it remains light and fluffy throughout the grow. I'm one of the "deleted members" but was a BOM winner in about april or march of 2012. That thread is gone but showed my Maxi grow with the big plant yielding 107 grms cleaned and dried with a taste like hash. I'm changing my whole system around and will be starting with a new soil. I'm tired of talking about MG soil and this will be the last of my posts on it

I use Promix BX and run at 6.3 per Muddy and JM and have wonderful success. A few things to consider with Promix is, the ph tends to climb through the grow so you need to stay on top of the runoff. At week one it will be 6.3 at week 2-3 it will be 6.4 at week 4-5 it will be 6.5. As it climbs you will have to lower the ph of your water accordingly. So if you are reading runoff of 6.5, at your next watering you need to be at 6.0 to compensate for the .2 too high. You would think 6.1 would compensate but you have to consider the rise that has taken place since your last runoff test and it will have probably risen .1 or so. Also, it is a little bit of a pain to break up. It comes in bails, so it is compressed quite a bit. The good part is, a little goes a lot longer than your typical soil mixture out of the bag. The bad part is, you really need to break it off and rub it between your hands to break everything up real well. You can't just use it out of the bail because it is almost like concrete, very compressed. Not that big of a deal if you are only filling up a couple of 5 gallon pots but if you are filling up more than 5 it takes some time. I just did 6 and it took me about 2 hours to break everything up and get them in my pots. Lastly, out of the bag it comes in around 6.8-7.0 ph. I normally take ph'ed water to 6.3 and saturate the media until I get a runoff of 6.3, that will alleviate any early onset of nute lockout or cal/mag deficiencies. In my signature, look at my auto grow and I didn't follow any of the recommendations above, you will see a plant that got off to a bad start and I had a hellluva a time keeping it on track. Look at the photo grow and you will see what results I have when following the above recommendations step by step. Quite a bit of difference in grows and much better success. I doubt I will ever change from Promix, it is a wonderful medium and I use it exclusively now on everything I grow, including the ~150 plants I put in my garden this Spring. Be aware... Promix BX has had a lot of problems with Thrips and other pests lately... me personally being a victim... 1 Bale from my regular place and 1 Bag from a different Nursery... and it took 3 of my best plants of my current grow. Other AFN growers are switching due to the same issues or pH issues so it's not just me... I'm not trying to scare you but just be aware. And pay attention to where they have it stored before you buy it. Meaning whether in a greenhouse or outside is NO GOOD. If you can help it try to buy it from a Hydro Store or some place that has it kept indoors/climate controlled. Best of luck!

I've not had any pest issues, but the nursery supply house I buy from keeps their stock indoors. I think any soil, not just Pro Mix, is susceptible to pest infestation when stored outdoors.

The starter nutes in Pro Mix get used up quickly, usually within 2 weeks. I normally start a 1/8 strength veg feeding at around 7 days, otherwise you may see some signs of N deficiency early in the grow.
