i wasnt sure if i should ask this in the organic section or here:shrug:i have decided
on pro-mix or fox farms are they pretty equal. am going to be growing pk
any comments have found local source for both and want to get it done
just some thoughts before i decide

They're not equal at all...Fox Farms is a much more complete soil. Most people prefer to blend Ocean Forest and Happy Frog in a 50/50 ratio. I'm not slagging Pro-Mix at all, I have used it and continue to in some applications, but overall, FF you'll find superior.

That being said...I think Roots Organics is the best soil I've ever used.

ffof has had quality control issues for some time and often burn peoples plants, it is the reason folk mix it w/ lw (maybe things have changed). i love sunshine advanced promix 4 wich is soiless and an excellent medium for organic nutes...i prefer GH organic line...

If you are new to growing I'd suggest FF Happy Frog. Promix is awesome but you'll need to use some additives a long the way, keep it simple. :2cents:

Of the two soils you are at different ends of the world.
FF has nutes in it, pro-mix don't.
This said be careful with ff and not add heavy nutes to young seedlings or transplanted plants to it. Perlite would be a good addition as well for it.

Pro-mix, you have to add nutes and keep adding from day 1 feeding to end. It has very little nutes in it.

Of the two, I prefer soil-less over soil mediums so I am in control of the plants intake and can adjust their needs manually.

I have grown in ff and it done well. Just be aware it is a bit hot and let plants tell you what it needs and don't assume it needs it before plant shows lack of nutrients.
Perlite is almost a must in ff to help drainage and such for the pot.

With Pro-mix, you can add worm casings and a tad more perlite as well as any other item you care to to help promote the plant.

Be sure to note, you may need extra items in the nute dept from cal-mag to npk.

They're right. Two entirely different mixes. Like Smashed said, FF has had issues for a while now. It seems sorta hit and miss, because there are still a lot of users and with success.

But for a new grower especially I would steer away from their products, mainly the Ocean Forest. It comes out of the bag too low in Ph almost always from my experience and thus needs lime added before I would even recommend planting in it. Plus, it's suggested not to start in mixes like that because they're too hot for young seedlings starting out. Some use Happy Frog or Light Warrior to start in or mix with one or the other. But that's just complicated in general and especially for new growers. Keep it simple, that is key.

I too use and greatly enjoy Promix BX and not sure if I'll ever use anything else. It's so easy and versatile. PERFECT straight out of the bag. Wet and roll out. It is considered semi soiless and grows better in a slightly lower Ph and can even handle Hydro Ph. That larger swing makes it easier for myself. It doesn't need anything, but PLAIN Ph water for the first 10 +/- days. You get to know exactly what's in their because you added it. Plants tend to need a little extra Calcium and Magnesium around week 5 in Promix, but that's an easy prevention/fix. And extra Phosphors and Potassium during heavy flower on some strains, but that isn't rare for other mixes too and also an easy prevention/fix when planned ahead.
And for around 35 bucks you get a huge compressed brick of it. I add plenty of perlite to the BX for great drainage and rock on. :head:

Hope this helps, take care. :D
