Mephisto Genetics Skylar White & Creme de la Chem [1st Grow Ever]

Day 5 update!

Not a whole lot of growth but I can see the second set of leaves starting to develop, moreso on the Skylar but still there on the Chem. I added a couple ounces of water to each because they were really dry up top, I haven’t done a real watering since planting 6 days ago. My soil meter says the bottom half (Ocean Forest) is still moist, the Light Warrior top half is dry. I misted water around both seedlings a couple times the last few days in addition to the couple oz of water yesterday. I really want to avoid gnats, and will be adding a perlite top layer by Wednesday this week. I’m also confused on how dry I should let the 5gal smart pot get before watering again. I didn’t expect the bottom half to still be this moist.

Also I never posted these earlier, here is my setup. Ladies started at 24” top of soil to lights, letting them grow toward the light unless otherwise strongly recommended.

I'm not sure about perlite, but I've heard coco is good for that, (at least I've never had them and I've seen a few gnats in the house)! Maybe a top dressing would help! I know sand will stop them, but it can make your pot more top heavy, (especially if you grow big plants! :headbang:

Decided on perlite, I have that coming in a few days; couldn’t find any locally yet (literally still snowing..).

Question for you smart pot, no-transplant folks. I know the rule of thumb is water when they need it and don’t overwater. I’m neurotic, but I got the message and dangers of overwatering through my head. I also hear smart pots help make it more difficult to overwater. I did a full 1.25 gal watering before I even planted and let the soil settle for around 6 hours prior to planting, and I haven’t done any more than a mist here and there and a small 2oz watering on both a couple days ago. It’s been 1 full week since planting - seems like a long time to go without watering again, and the top half is dry but bottom half is moist per the meter. Should I really leave it until it’s 100% dry before adding any more water?

The second set of leaves are really starting to come in, the main set are getting longer and thicker.

Second set of leaves are barely starting on this one, but the first set are much longer than even yesterday.

I can’t wait for these to really start developing!

Update!

Ok, we’re currently at Day 12. I feel like growth is way behind where it should be, what do you all think? I just added the perlite top layer an hour ago and gave them the first thorough watering since planting, about a half gallon in each. I have watered about 5” around each seedling with between 2-3oz each plus misting maybe 4-5 times in between. The soil stayed pretty moist at the bottom third of each pot according to my meter, so I let them be except for small waterings occasionally until the pot had gotten to the first notch of “dry” indicator on the soil meter. Now with a more established plant and the extra perlite on top I’m not as paranoid about gnats. :D

Hey guys,

Need a little advice on the CDLC. It’s still growing, but seems further behind its Skylar cousin and the leaves are sagging. The plant looks healthy aside from the sagging, and I can’t tell if it’s a problem or it’s just the way this strain grows.

Check it out - pics are super bright because of the reflection of the perlite top layer.

Honestly I want to say ur good! The plant isn’t use to supporting big leaves so kind of droopy ? IMO! I always put a little air on my plants if I feel they are droopy. I see u went with a perlite cover. It’s takes a little but learn how to water your plants by weight of the pot . I feel that’s the best way. U won’t be able to see ur soil but better that way.

@sliceking im gonna guess over watering. Pots shouldn’t be super heavy. I go by weight. I also elevate my pots so they can dry from the bottom as well this allows for more frequent feedings at first. Plants will droop from overwatering. Every first timer does it let them dry out a bit.

Nail on the head. He is overwatering and using bad soil...which makes your problem even worse. Get some circulation, a fan blowing to help dry your pots. Good luck

I’ve been really careful about overwatering but apparently not careful enough. I did raise both pots 2” and they have a Tower fan on low in the tent as of a few days ago. I turned the 6” clip fan on high and have it aimed at the top of the tent to encourage circulation.

Testing moisture last night (Sunday) after watering Saturday and the Skylar is moist, the Chem is dryer but still moist at the bottom so I’ll leave it for now. Using the lift test the Chem is way lighter than the Skylar but I’ll still leave it.

As far as nutrients go, I’ve got the FF trio. Was going to start 25% dose in a few days, or the next watering. Should I wait to 3 weeks? I’m at 2 weeks as of today.

Next time around I’m either going to cut the FFOF with 30% perlite or go with ProMix because a local garden center just opened and they carry it there.

I’ll post updated pics this morning. Thanks all!
