Hot damn, a book thread! Cheers for starting it!
Right now I am reading the fattest book of my life. I usually prefer books that are 300 pages or less, but this one is over 1,400 pages long---and it is absolutely the most thrilling & beautifully written book I have ever redd: The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas.
What a cracking good read!
Seriously, I usually hate "ancient" books because of references I know nothing about, and this one certainly contains words that are archaic and foreign and related to old-time sailing, but my god! I just skim over those words and nothing is lost. Skimming over them does NOT detract from the story.
It's a story about revenge. I just LOVE stories about revenge. But it also has alot of heart & humanity about it. It has moved me to tears quite a few times; tears related to heroism and overcoming struggles and treating people better than they expect to be treated. Alot of heart, this book. I can see why it was so popular in its day and continues to be published over 150 years later.
I really dig the dignified way the characters speak to each other...Yea, it's old fashioned but still so lovely and precise!
It's one helluva an adventurous book! I have never seen any movies or tv shows about it and so it's all new to me.
It's about a 19 year old dude who was imprisoned in France for a crime he did not commit. He was a good dude, an honourable dude, liked & loved by most everyone, but a couple of assholes were jealous of his position and his beautiful fiance and they wrote a letter to the police telling them he was a traitor to his country. He gets thrown into a horrible prison without a trial and ends up being there for 14 years. Whilst there he eventually meets an old prisoner whom everyone thinks is crazy but he's not. The old dude ends up educating & telling the young dude where a treasure is...and the young dude eventually escapes and finds the treasure and cooks up a plan to get revenge on the assholes who did him wrong.
A real page turner, this one. Absolutely marvellous. Although I gotta say it probably won't appeal to you if you're under 30 or 40...for one thing, it's really long, and young people don't have the patience for such things, and for another, it's got alot of heart & soul---and these things don't really mean much to you when you're young, angry, and ambitious (no offence intended---and there are always exceptions to the general rule!).
I am about 500 pages into it and I love this goddamn book!:hot:
