Live Stoner Chat The Book Thread.

Hot damn, a book thread! Cheers for starting it!

Right now I am reading the fattest book of my life. I usually prefer books that are 300 pages or less, but this one is over 1,400 pages long---and it is absolutely the most thrilling & beautifully written book I have ever redd: The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas.

What a cracking good read!

Seriously, I usually hate "ancient" books because of references I know nothing about, and this one certainly contains words that are archaic and foreign and related to old-time sailing, but my god! I just skim over those words and nothing is lost. Skimming over them does NOT detract from the story.

It's a story about revenge. I just LOVE stories about revenge. But it also has alot of heart & humanity about it. It has moved me to tears quite a few times; tears related to heroism and overcoming struggles and treating people better than they expect to be treated. Alot of heart, this book. I can see why it was so popular in its day and continues to be published over 150 years later.

I really dig the dignified way the characters speak to each other...Yea, it's old fashioned but still so lovely and precise!

It's one helluva an adventurous book! I have never seen any movies or tv shows about it and so it's all new to me.

It's about a 19 year old dude who was imprisoned in France for a crime he did not commit. He was a good dude, an honourable dude, liked & loved by most everyone, but a couple of assholes were jealous of his position and his beautiful fiance and they wrote a letter to the police telling them he was a traitor to his country. He gets thrown into a horrible prison without a trial and ends up being there for 14 years. Whilst there he eventually meets an old prisoner whom everyone thinks is crazy but he's not. The old dude ends up educating & telling the young dude where a treasure is...and the young dude eventually escapes and finds the treasure and cooks up a plan to get revenge on the assholes who did him wrong.

A real page turner, this one. Absolutely marvellous. Although I gotta say it probably won't appeal to you if you're under 30 or 40...for one thing, it's really long, and young people don't have the patience for such things, and for another, it's got alot of heart & soul---and these things don't really mean much to you when you're young, angry, and ambitious (no offence intended---and there are always exceptions to the general rule!).

I am about 500 pages into it and I love this goddamn book!:hot:

I've been loosing sleep the last few nights because I can't put down Dan Brown's new Inferno. Typical Dan Brown awesomeness. Non-Stop page turner from page one and not a word wasted in his eye opening look at our pending over-population and one man's "cure" for it... This one really makes you stop and take a look at life and the situation this planet is in right now. I, personally, choose Truth and Unconditional Love, as opposed to blood and the Cull.
p.s.- How many people have you hugged today? I'm taking you all in right now in a big old mass-hugging!
(I'm in the middle of mowing the lawn right now and that's why I'm all sweaty sticky.. Sorry. :o)

:thumb: noods! So much going on in my world didn't even know he had a new book out... Going to purchase it right now! Thanks for the heads up!

I've read all his other stuff. Deception Point was pretty good - same w/digital fortress and the lost symbol. Might have to reread all that jazz since I've got the night off.

Also I wanna make sure audible.com was mentioned - it's the amazon of books on tape and they usually have sweet deals/promos. For when you're on the road or whatever.

Guy Gavriel Kay does it again. I find myself wondering how he can continue to constantly better himself with each new book he writes. Seems an impossibility, but he does it every single time.

...and then 300 - 400 years later, this happened...

His books are best read chronologically, in the order that he's written them, for a better and more complete understanding of the entanglement of the worlds he creates. This enlightened soul, named Guy Gavriel Kay, has a way of mesmerizing his readers. It's not normal reading. It's like the words just melt into your eyes and mind. So very uniquely beautiful.
Happy Reading, tokers!

I love George R.R. Martin...I just finished up A clash of Kings and what can I say except epic...I can't wait for my library to finally get A Storm of Swords in. I've been dying to continue

Finally got A Storm of Swords about 2 weeks ago...half way thru the book and can't stop reading...I highly suggest reading this series

Agreed Diablow. Great reading there. The HBO filming is really, really killer, but still... the books are true diamonds with all the sparkles that TV can't come close to.
:peace:
