The traits to select away from

The trichomes don't mature on the tails though, or maybe they do but it would take ages? Maybe someone else knows, but for me, not within 13 weeks at least
I recall in another AFN discussion there was good agreement that a healthy vigorous plant's foxtails are just as potent and good as the buds they are on. Perhaps an analogy is that fluffy airy Sativa buds can be just as potent and good (or better) vs. dense hard nugs/golfballs, and there is prejudice against fluffy airy buds (of which foxtails are a subset).

A true advance, revolutionary, would be "selecting away from," getting rid of cannabis cells needing to self-associate into organs/tissues/plants. Strip down the cannabis genome, revert it to be algae-like and grow as single cells. Then we could do relatively simple suspension cell culture/fermentation -- grow THC- and other terpene-excreting cells in liquid media likely using clear glass/plastic photosynthesis (bio)reactors with much the same lights. And presumably the cell lines would just do their thing right off -- no waiting months; harvest (filter the culture media, then purify) in days-a few weeks.

An analogy is the development of the human and other mammalian cell lines now commonly used for manufacturing of recombinant proteins, particularly biopharmaceuticals.
