Hey guys been a minute but its been really crazy for me here the last few months. Any ways been upgrading my grow equipment for my little grow box. Its a 2x3x5 cabinet. I picked-up a 400 watt MH/HPS light and a 4 inch carbon filter. The filter says 200 cfm and was wondering just what that number really means. Is that the max cfm that the filter will work at effectively ?? As of now Im running 80 cfm as an exhaust and was wondering if thats going to be enough?? :dunno:

cubic feet per minute, width x length x height of your grow room, for example if your grow space is 8' x 8' x 8' your cubic feet would be 512 cubic feet. Your extraction fan should be able to adequately exchange the air in an indoor garden once every three minutes. Therefore, 512 cubic feet / 3 minutes = 171 CFM. This will be the absolute minimum CFM for exchanging the air in an indoor garden.

200 cubic feet per minute.
That is what your filter will filter optimally and most effectively at.
Higher or lower fan cfm will result in lower performance or life. of the filter.
Your fan is definitely underated for that filter.
You may not have enough fan speed to pull air through the filter, if you do, and it is getting rid of the smell, then you are probably alright.

As long as you are getting negative pressure (Sides of the tent suck in) in your grow space under powering the fan will make the filter last longer as less air is being filtered through it and the air has more contact time with the carbon. If you go over the rating you will pull air past the carbon so fast it will not get deodorized. As long as you don't smell anything you should be good! :peace:
