Hey everyone. I develop mobile and web applications and am interested in making an application that targets what growers need. I'd love to hear from everyone about features they would like to have on their mobile devices in regard to growers. There are only a couple applications (at least for iOS) that do this, and almost none really live up to their potential. On the other hand there are literally tons of dispensary locators- so I feel like the demand is certainly there.

My current thoughts:
  • A growing compendium hosting information on getting started, hydro vs. soil, nutrients and deficiencies, photo vs auto, making extracts, cloning/seeds, etc. I think it would be great if this were open source so that skilled growers could add their documents or alterations with approval.
  • A section for user submitted edible recipes - possibly with the ability to favorite and comment anonymously (still working out details)
  • A growers logbook section that allows you to log waterings, nutrients, soil specs, ph, lighting, descriptions, photos, etc. across multiple grows.
Maybes
  • Possibly a dosage diary for medical users monitoring their intake? Unsure about this one still.
  • Perhaps a social stoner feature where you can friend other stoners, share pictures, stories, grow journals, etc.?
What else would you like to see in a mobile application for growers? What would draw you in to use one? Do you think this would just be a waste of time for you?
Thanks for your feedback!

There are apps out there already but not many of them seem to fill the "all in one " niche. We also cover the vast majority (if not all) of those suggested topics right here with our forum, which provides a community/peer platform for growers to help each other. :bighug:

Thanks @Son of Hobbes! The lack of an "all-in-one" niche app is exactly what I hope to fill. That being said, I certainly would never want to detract from this community and the immense resource that it is (or even attempt to emulate it for that matter- especially considering mobile forum applications already in existence). I can't even imagining building a compendium as large as what this and other grower forums have become.

Rather, I'm more interested in creating something of a quick-reference/quick access app that can allow growers to quickly log statistics or access needed information (in a general sense). I think a mobile application could also tackle some convenience issues that can't be handled by large forums. For instance, allowing quick sorting of user submitted recipes by the same sorting functions (meal type, prep time, culture, etc.) that you would have available to you on platforms like Allrecipes. I know I'm also guilty of getting sucked down the rabbit hole when I hop on forums for information. I feel that an app with a few concise growing resources would be helpful for quick reference- or as a beginners quick-start when combing through stickies and threads feels overwhelming.

Please forgive me if this is too "infringey" (making that word up) on what this forum is built to be. I absolutely don't want to step on the community's toes or try to steal away members. Rather, I'd just like to be an additional, (and very shallow in comparison) resource that members have access too, more like a companion than a competitor. The way I envisioned it was more like a "grower's cheat sheet & log" so to speak. I appreciate the input from such an esteemed member!

Oh and @Dr.Bubbles it would be cross platform in React Native. So both!

I should add that I am not an incredibly experienced developer. This is more of a pet portfolio project for me than a dedication to a scalable or profitable project.

Why not make this forum mobile friendly, Tapatalk is limited in what you can see and the forum is unwieldy on a phone.

Sent from my comfy chair.

Id love an aio app for android.
You definately have the right idea (all that you listed)
I might suggest adding a nutrient guide for organic soil growers...

Example
Such as searching for a nutrient (ie: phosphorus) and it returning to add seabird guano.

I know this would have been really helpful last grow as i was suffering calmag and phos def. Id have killed to see just water in seabird guano and some organic calmag amendment.

Itd say its just as imperative to have a photo gallery that timestamps the photos (and maybe easily arranged) for documenting.

Security is one of my pet peevs. So limiting access to location data and personal data like contacts is a must.

Having a customizable feed chart would be awesome.

The ability to track multiple plants within the same grow (for perpetual growers with 1 space like me)

Thats all ive got atm. Best of luck in your endeavors.

No No NO please... an App for Growers - Bud of the Day - Nute Advertising - Hints n Tips er... why not just redirect the App to Afn.

Sorry as an old school grower using new skills (and LEDs) I say NO TO APPs, and if it NEEDs an APP don't buy it.

Sorry if that sounds a bit like a rant - but I really despise the proliferation of Apps for this Apps for that. The only use I could see for an App is in Remote Monitoring and Control Systems, and as I said hell if it comes with an App I aint buying it... << said old Hillbilly style with Scots accent.

There's a section on AfN for modders building remote control systems, and other projects.

Personally, I find “all-in-one” apps an epic fail. There’s no way to include it “all” in an app and with cannabis growing there are conflicting methodologies, theories, etc. So, which one are you going to include? You can’t include them all - you’d just confuse people. Germinating seeds alone - there are at least 6 methods I can think of quickly and some people have success with all of them. Which one will you choose? Well, you just turned off the folks using the other 5 methods. Lol!

Here’s an app I think I’d use/buy...A grow journal/tracker/log that would allow me to pull out all sorts of data. Basically, a database without the nerdy feel of a database. I know what they are but not a clue how to use one properly. An app with the ability to attach images as I progress, track growth, weather, pests/diseases, yields, etc. Maybe some informational/quick reference pages like leaf characteristics with various deficiencies. If you’re looking for a advertising component, you could offer product links to nutrients to correct issues searched for.

What would be BRILLIANT is to find a way to link the input of data into the app journal with our grow journals here and other forums. As an option, of course! I would love to be able to input my observations, photos, and what I just did in the garden, AS I’m doing it and then have it propagate that info to my forum grow journals. This would be hard to achieve because it would require cooperation from forum owners, not to mention the coding. Maybe the way to do it would be to have a web portal that forums as well as app users could connect to, as the point of connection between the mobile app and the forums.

Also, something that would be compatible with monitoring systems like Pulse.

There’s definitely room for a good growers app. I haven’t seen a growers app that was worth a damn and there are very few to choose from. I have NO use for a dispensary app and think they’re retarded. But a true grower app that’s a utility instead of a gimmicky sale tool would be incredible. I WISH I knew how to code stuff because ide be working on it myself. Lol! Best of luck!!
