Hi people ,Probably a stupid question but can someone tell me when the Veg phase starts ,is it when the seed pops up with those first little leaves?? reason is I see and hear many say things like "she's been in veg for 3 weeks " ,I want to do a grow journal so need a starting point .
Cheers Kev

No...when the plant pops it's called a sprout or grow shoot. This is the very first set of embryonic leaves that have smooth edges. It does not require any nutrients as it's initial energy is contained inside the seed. From there it grows it's 1st node, and is called a seedling. This is when the leaves get their serrated edges, but are still premature and small. Each new node produces more complex leaves until it's got a set of full blown fan leaves. This is when photosynthesis really starts and the plant takes off and requires lots of available nitrogen. Vegetative stage is marked by explosive growth and the plant is now completely dependant on the environment.

Are you talking about plants in general, or are you talking about autoflowering cannabis? Because there is a difference. I'm also not aware of any stage in which the plant is completely dependent on the environment. Can you explain a little more please.

Sorry for bring up an old thread, but could you possibly tell me the differences? This is my first grow and I was also wondering about when veg starts. My plant is 10 days old now, its had very good growth from what I could tell.
