I bought a five pound bag of worm castings to add to my compost tumbler and noticed a very strong ammonia smell. is this the way they are suppose to smell maybe it's not ammonia but a urea smell or diesel exhaust fluid like goes in a diesel truck. kinda debating on whether to use it or not now.

May have gone anaerobic on you, they should not smell like that.

I'm not sure, but you might be able to mix and oxygenate in your garage or backyard, stir it occasionally and let the fresh air help reestablish the good guys. I'm not certain though, really, but you could try and see if the smell goes away.

@Eyes on Fire would be a good organic dude to ask, I'll tag him for you, he's usually around several times a week

yeah I had that with a store bought item of EWC before.I opted not to use it. and if its super pungent and amonia'esk smelling and its like a inhalant kinda strong I would avoid that.f its very slight it could possibly be brought around, but any more than that Im sorry but you prolly got a sour batch, bad storage and even possibly a bad batch. depends on the maker, but imho. I would avoid it and bring it to their attention .I would. might get a replacment.fesh or stored properly ,casting should NOT smell harsh like that. smells like micro death LOL too hot.lacked and wet and dried..hard to say. makig fresh is best and pretty easy too. and you maintain quality control at all times. but yeah man, take it back if able and ask for a replacement or refund, swut Id do :D

thanks for the reply guys . that's what I will do take it back. this is my first time buying any and wasn't sure if they were suppose to smell like that or not.
I use casting all the time ,never smell like that, definitely take back instead of risking it
