I have some plants that are non AF that look like their ready for harvest. I have several magnifying pieces at various levels of magnification but I'll be damned if I can determine the color of the tri's . Their either clear or cloudy but these poor old eyes cannot make out which ? I'm guessing that if their clear the t.h.c. level is going to be less than if they were cloudy ??

That is kind of debatable 1939, I have read that clear trichs are just as potent as cloudy. If you have a picture you can post I am sure you will get a couple of comments. Even if it is a digital camera shot, if you zoom in fairly close it can be pretty easy to tell.

My motto, when in doubt pull it out. I don't like for mine to go amber.

Cut you off a few select buds,
place them in a preheated toaster oven or oven set to about 120f
give them about 15minutes
if they are a bit dry go ahead and put em in your pipe and get a sample
If they are still a bit damp give them another 10 minutes and then test.

It will taste a bit green, but you can get a good idea of whether you will be content chopping them after a final flush

I meant to add, you could cut a branch close to the main stem and place it in a glass or pitcher (sort of like a bouquet of flowers)
And leave this for a few days.
This will flush the buds on that branch for the sample and allow the photoperiod plant to keep on growing.
Then you can quick dry or hang dry as you wish.

Same problem here, what I did find though was that when they started to turn amber I could see that well enough to tell them apart from the clear/cloudy ones.

The THC level really doesn't drop much until they start to turn amber. That's when the THC starts to break down and form CBD. That's why plants left to amber give more of a body stone while plants taken when the trics are clear/cloudy give more of a head high. How does the rest of the plant look? Are the pistols turning brown/red and the large fan leaves turning yellow or died off already? Post a couple of pictures, one of the whole plant and a close up of the buds.

CBD, or CBN?

The primary goal of any plant is to create and nurture seeds to be viable for future growth. Trichomes help prevent seed damage from insects, animals, light degradation and fungal disease. In the case of cannabis, trichomes also contain THC, the chemical compound that provides a psychedelic high to humans. THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol (C21H30O2). Near the end of the flowering cycle, THC begins to break down and turns into another chemical compound called Cannabinol, or CBN (C21H26O2), in a process known as oxidization. Higher levels of CBN tend to provide a more narcotic or ?stoned? feeling, while THC delivers a more euphoric, upbeat ?high?. Knowing this, you can examine the trichomes and the pistils of the plant, then choose when you harvest to get the psychoactive effects you desire.
