Week 14 - Bud rot... oh no!

All but the last two branches have been hung up to dry, and several have been debudded and are curing.

I did find some bud rot. About 6 different locations. Each one was minor and I was able to spot it and nip it in the bud. It's quite easy to spot, you just have to keep your eyes peeled for leaves that die suddenly and mysteriously. These leaves will turn all brown all at once, then black. This means bud rot has not only started but has progressed a bit. But it doesn't get very far if you're vigilant and get right after it. Here's one that I didn't get to until I had harvested the branch. Removing a single bud... or two... is all that is needed. Notice in this picture the dead, brown leaf towards the left which is what clued me in to this infection.

Interestingly, I have had only two plants that had bud rot. They were both 'Northern Lights' autos. Of all the plants I've grown these two had the thickest, densest colas. The first time I didn't know what was going on and it got out of hand and destroyed a good part of that plant's production. This year the loss is negligible. The unusual heat and humidity in mid/late August I think was too blame.

I've been harvesting over a 10 day period cuz the upper branches seem to ripen before the lower ones. So I work my way down one day at a time. I've been frustrated with using mason jars with hygrometers in each. It's a pain in the butt and the small hygrometers are low quality and useless. So I picked up a single trustworthy hygrometer and I'm curing the whole plant in this one plastic tub. I just keep adding new buds to it and burping it as necessary. Best idea I've ever had. It's working quite nicely so far.

Once cured, humidity-stabilized, and ready for storage I will put them in mason jars with standard lids.
