BANGERS AND MASH
A British staple, the ‘mash’ part of the name is easy to work out (mashed potato), but where does the word ‘banger’ come from?
It comes from the sausage, one of the oldest types of processed food in history, can be traced back to ancient times.
British pork sausages have been mass produced since the 19th century.
The Victorians, sceptical of what was actually in a sausage and suspecting the presence of rather a lot of horsemeat, nicknamed them ‘Little Bags of Mystery’.
After the outbreak of World War I, food shortages led to a dramatic reduction of meat, of any sort, in sausages.
Instead, producers packed them out with scraps, cereal and water, which caused them to pop and hiss when cooked on shovels over open fires in the trenches of northern Europe — hence ‘bangers’.
A British sausage needs to have 32% meat to be classed as a sausage and the average sausage has around 42% and the meat content can go up to 99%.
As a sausage with less than 32% can not officially be called a sausage under the trade description act, manufactures will label them "Bangers"
In general I like a 85% meat sausage with the other 15% being made up of the casing , Rusk ( Dried unleavened bread made in to crumbs) herbs and spices.
Tonight it will veggy sausages as my lady is a vegetarian.
The word "Bangers" is also affectionate colloquial term for any sausage especially when served with mash which is evocative of childhood memories when you Mum would give you "bangers and Mash"on a cold winter evening, leaving you feeling warm and toasty. It is also further enhanced with a thick onion gray and some peas on the side.
The word "Banger" occurs often in British slang meaning the following -
- An intense party, which involves large amounts of drinking, beer pong, and plenty of skanks to grind on. Always leaving the house a total mess.
- A particularly spectacular pair of breasts.
- Small fireworks designed to make a loud bang, popular with children.
- a girl with an attractive body
- its a shortened version of the old cockney rhyming slang Bangers and mash .... Cash but in the more modern way we use bangers is a way of expressing having lots of cash.
- tricks with finesse and style (skateboard and BMX)
- a gun
- a homemade shiv/shank. term mainly used in prison
- a person who is a very good and very strong fighter
- scottish word. a derrogative term. - aye f*****G bolt ye banger.
- an ecstasy tablet, e, x, yoke etc. especially in Waterford and some other parts of southern Ireland
- An old, delapidated worn out car or less commonly, van.
It will usually have been around the clock and will be rusty and clapped out.
Good examples of bangers are old reps cars which have been to Mars and back.
Most Private Hire Taxis are bangers and they are also used to race around dirt tracks for fun.

- A banger is a man or woman who is very strong and could/will fight anyone, any time. He is usually hench or fat
- Banger is a piece of poo that comes from anus, it is usually brown smelly and can leave a snail trail in the toilet and panties.
- A player who is too old to play for a team but continues to play illegally. A 16 year old playing on the under-15s team.
- the result of saying "bang her" to fast.
- A Billiards slang term given to a recreational player. A banger is a player who is considered to be lacking in skills. Banger is a derogatory term assigned to a beginner billiard player who lacks skill. The banger does not make any attempt to control the cue ball nor does he or she give any meaningful thought to position. A banger is also a term used to reference a beginner player when he or she strikes the cue ball harder than necessary.
- Ultra low-quality cannabis consisting mainly of seeds and stems. Mostly used in reference to pot bought off of the street dealers on the U.S. west coast.
