Well I suppose it depends on how long it's been sitting around, are they stored in heat/cold, in direct light/in complete darkness/just left on a shelf/etc., and if the cap was on securely.
Seems like there could be chances of bacteria, mold, fungus, algae, and other living organisms could take over and create odors.
Went to go buy Fox Farm products, but the store owner told me they contain some sort of other minerals which needs to be flushed every so often, rather than just at the end before harvesting.
So he directed me towards Root Organics and when I opened them up, they smell like fermented soy bean paste. Except it seems like it's mixed with an additional harsher/nasty stinky odor to it.
IMO, if you have a place to keep it for a bit longer, then I would hold onto it and test them on a male(if you are going to discard the males away) and see what happens if you feed them that grow big. When in doubt, try it out. Or...toss it away if you can't stand the smell (if it reeks the whole place or makes you/loved ones sick), and if YOU think it's no good.
I apologize for the long post. I can't find a potato smiley, so here's a kitty.
