Lighting citizen 1212

Do a search for just about every thread smO has chimed in on and you will find they are the darling of the cheap bastard cob club. You can build a light engine with them for under $30.

That aint too shabby.

Nah, anyone thats a member is too cheap to cough up the cash... Its hard to believe seeing it for myself that anyone with a modest set of skills would opt out of the chance to get that much performance for that little outlay. I guess if you like to show off your grow online the big lights look mighty good. And they DO work, but I am now struggling hard to justify the difference between the two with my kind of budget. Even if the really high end lights get a greater yield, how much versus the DIY or Kit cobs would be a nice thing to make a comparison with. In the end, if you are just growing for yourself it is all about how much quality bud you can get for a minimum of outlay. I aint in it for the bragging rights. I just want to enjoy the fruits of my labors. I think a lot of my fellow Auto enthusiasts are pretty much the same.

And in my eyes these low cost cob engines get it done.

Sure as shit looking that way.

I don't think their should be a rush to get into citizen or Cree but I do think they pay themselves off in short time with larger grows. Especially the clu048's. The 058's do get pricey and are really beneficial in higher wattages. There is much out there as far as efficiency goes on your cobs so making "worth it" determination is tough as far as performance goes. For a 4-8 cob grow 10-20% isn't going to change much. When you start adding wattage with a calculator then they may make a big enough difference. As long as the lights and yield is there then it's less important if you draw an extra 50 watts. Like you said None of this really matters if your satasfied with the yield.

Here's a cob array recently built with three 1212s. These are great chips, I run them at 50W or 1400mA and they put out a lot of light.

And the cost is great.
$10 - 048-1212
$11 - Arctic 11 heatsink
$10-15 - Driver

I absolutely love the flexibility of single cobs like that. Especially in the autoflower world. Today I have 9 pots with germinating seeds in an area where 3 weeks ago had a 7 and 8 oz plant. Being able to easily adjust and move lights around to suit your new needs is something that I think is necessary. I'd rather put pots in places that has room and move a light or lights.

BigSmO I have been looking at DIY and reading alot of your threads and been watching Videos by Growmau5 and there is a lot of good information. The question I am having is how do you determine spacing on the lights? I am looking at using the citizen 1212 in a 4x4. Just trying to figure out what I would would need before I start my DIY early next year.

There are allot of variables that go into lighting a space. You can go the super efficient route or the normal route. A good starting point is 25w per sq' which would equal 400 cob watts total. An awesome setup would be 12 cobst total at 25w each. Cost of cobs/holders and heatsinks go up but it is a very cool running 400 watts and will pay itself back rather quickly.
