I've been using the Accurate 8 soil probe meter for about a year and a half now and absolutely love it. Far as I'm concerned, it is the only accurate soil probe available today. With a 12" probe I'm able to take soil pH readings at the heart of the root mass. This allows me to get more accurate readings than checking run off.
I know others here, including JM, KindredSpirit and hereb4 are also using them. I'd be curious to know who else is using an Accurate 8 and what your opinion of them is.
For those looking to buy one, here's the best price I've found: http://www.horticulturesource.com/control-wizard-control-wizard-accurate-ph-8-p3015/. $46.75 plus S&H.
