Nice! Thanks for the in depth reply Mark! Seems like quite a few folks hang dry and then go into brown bags. Must be a reason for it!

I would say it's mainly to get the moisture out or should I say most of the moisture out

Think about it logically mate. If you put fresh cut flowers into a bag your trapping all the moisture in which will cause issue's in my opinion

I just do what my dad taught me and over 40 years I've never had a crop go moldy or rot issues whilst drying. I have growing but never in the drying stage

Anyone who's done outdoor for 2 years+ if you ain't had a rot issue something ain't right

I mentioned plenty of air movement!

This is essential but don't have your fans directly blowing at the flowers

I use 3 ocilating fans set around 6-10 feet away from the branches drying with no direct wind blast and constantly turning on a low setting

Only time I think paper bags are good right off the plant is if the RH% is so brutally low you need that higher "air RH% buffer" to slow the drying down... too fast and the "death thoes" chemistry can't take place properly, and you get that harsher greener tasting funk,.... I think a certain amount of moisture needs to be present for this to happen....

Hopefully I'm not hijacking RGs thread too much here, but my humidity is maxing out at about 40% right now, I was thinking of going straight to brown bag... Is my humidity about right for that?

I'd be breaking everything down into golf ball sizes or smaller and spacing them out some with brown bags in a cardboard box.

I normally hang dry, but my previous place of residence had really high humidity (60% throughout the house), so I'm interested to see what you guys think.

I hang mine up side down and leave some of the fan leaves on to cover the bud while she drys it helps keeping the bud covered.

My approach has always been

1 prior to harvest I'll remove all fan leaves which makes the next stages more easier (Done over 3-4 day's a few each day)

2 chop the whole plant and either cut of the stems or leave whole.

3 give a quick trim to remove leaves that have no trichomes

4 hang to dry with the right humidity 60% temps around 65o(f), dark room with plenty of airflow.

5 after 5-7 day's I'll remove all buds from the big stems. Do a good trim over a "trim bin" or hash screen

6 I'll now jar or brown bag my weed for another 5-7 day's. I prefer glass jars with boveda pack 58% if I recall I don't use boveda if I'm brown bagging

After a week like this I'll do my final trim and quality control check

Then cure time. In glass with Boveda packs

That's just my method buddy, adapt to suit

Perfect answers, I have started doing the same, only the humidity is SO low here I often skip the bag now and they go into jars, with a small hygrometer. If the buds are over 62% I put them on a bag for 12 hours then back in jars ti test again. I use the 62% Boveda, either the small ones for smaller jars or the big honkers like this jar (OK having issues uploading, I'll try again in the next message). This is part of my QC + harvest.

Oh you should smell it now, SO sweet smelling. I wish I could pass my bounty around to you all, I share with all my friends here but I love having a large group just hanging out, smoking and chilling.

My humidity is usually really low too, but the basement has been super damp so it actually worked to hang them down there this time. I had decent air flow (but good tip to not have direct, I did)! They still dried in about a week, as the humidity was up and down and I opened the door to get the humidity down. So it went from about 58%-70%+

I was wet trimming and putting directly in paper bags, and the bud was still pretty smooth. But it smells even better and I still need to smoke some and give a report.

Around 68-70F is best, RH% depending,... 40% is borderline on bag use IMO, what's the day/night swing on that? ....maybe let them open air dry for a day or 2, to moderate wilting, then bag them, single layer (I lay the bag on it's side) and closed,...check them daily to track drying rate.... setting the bag onto something breathable is recommended too!

My pheno' was very odd, strongly leaning sativa in bud build/density, and the aroma was sweet cedar/pine and citrus dominating, floral notes in the back seats.. super yummy, never had sweet cedar like this before! But entirely different from what samples I've had before... She was fast as hell too, 6 weeks bloom and done! makes me wonder how much faster the Quick version can do than this, if at all? Most everything finishes ahead of general descriptions for me when outside, I think seasonal influences and the light hours changing rate are, at least in part, facilitating this....

I have grown some strains from other breeders that were SO far off the stated time I won't touch them again. Most are pretty close tho.

Your humidity is about right to brown bag mate but other factors such as temperature must be considered

I would still do a hang dry prior to bagging for 3-5 day's. By they those buds should be "snapping" away from the main stalks or very close
